I cant decide which one of these .22's to get, I like the Marlin becuase its accurate out of the box and its cheap, but theres not alot of aftermarket parts for it. The Remington has some aftermarket parts, but then again I heard alot of bad things about them, which apparently have been fixed in the newer models. So if I decide to get a 597 what do I look for to know im getting the newer version.

Do yourself a favour and get the 795 and never look back. I have one as my hunting .22 and it's very accurate and very light. So with those 2 things in mind theres really no need to change out parts so you don't need aftermarket parts.

i got 2 597's and a cooey and a norinco leaver action. I really like the 597 with 30 rnd mags. I ionly fill mine to 25 and my thumbs dont hurt after. I actually just bought a new 597 in that yellow jacket. It is a sweet little gun.

795. Fairly cheap still ($30-60 increase depending on model) and it just works. Last shot bolt hold open is also a bonus.

Im mainly looking for the 30 round mags and thats the only reason im considering the Rem 597, do the plastic 30 round mags cycle good? Or do people only use the 10 round 3rd gen metal mags for good results?

i got the 30rd ones for mine. I only load them to 25 so they dont jam but they do cycle fine and work good. Lots of dead PD's last year to prove it.

I'll tell you somthing Marty. I had a 10/22 once. (I know, horror of horrors. Even I owned one once. :p) I bought the rifle and two 25 round mags. I thought they would be the cat's meow for a good pasture full of gophers. I hated them. First off, they were too long and made laying prone a pain in the arse. I like to carry my rifle by it's belly. You can't do that with a big honking magazine hanging out. The whole spray and pray concept was created by the first guy to put a 25 round mag under a 10/22. The rifles accuracy was horrible, and the temptation to keep squeezing off shots was too great. I burned up alot of ammo, more than I should have. Because of that, I spent more time loading that damn thing than I did looking for gophers. I tried a speed loader, but it was akward to carry and took up precious space in my ammo pouch. I finally just used the factory flush fit magazine while in the field and the 25 rounders at the range. Even then only for awhile as the plastic feed rails wore down and turned the mags into worthless pieces of crap. IF I were in the market for a .22 self loader, I would look at a few items. First, the 597 has a reputation for being garbage. Many have them and like them. My best bud's got one. For years he was convinced if he tightened this screw or that, adjusted the guide rods perfect, and held the rifle just right it would cycle fine. If he didn't do that, he blamed it on one of his steps. (And I guess I never held the rifle just right, as I never was able to get it to cycle a full magazine once.) Yes his is an early model, but I don't think you should have to wait and see if your rifle will fire a full mag without a hickup, and if it does that certainly shouldn't be cause for celebration. (Now with all that being said, I was thinking of buying a pair just to have as they were selling them pretty cheap. I never did get around to that.) He has finally admited his rifle is junk and now shoots his Norinco bolt action most of the time.

The 795 is in my opinion a better rifle. It is basically the same action as the model 60, and I used to love mine. It was wonderful for thousands, upon thousands of rounds. But one day it got real dirty and I had to take it apart. It was a challenge and not for the faint of heart. It is also somthing I probably won't do anymore. If I were to suggest an autoloader to someone based on that fact, you cannot beat the 10/22 for maintanence.

I have a 795 and its far superior, shooting wise to my friends 597. However that being said, the problem with the 795 is there is not many after market parts for it. But if you want something that will give you extremely good accuracy, a boatload of safety features. A last shot bolt open and easy controls than a 795 will not steer you wrong. There is really nothing wrong with the 597 except the mag design. It's a double column magazine, which for rimmed cases like the .22LR cause hangups. My friend had a hell of a time trying to find ammo that the mag would like. He eventually got the 3nd gen mag which wasn't plastic but aluminum and it helped alot. Although I still like the 795 for its last shot bolt open. I can change mags superfast on that rifle and hit the bolt release ready to rock in no time.
