I'll tell you somthing Marty. I had a 10/22 once.
(I know, horror of horrors. Even I owned one once.
) I bought the rifle and two 25 round mags. I thought they would be the cat's meow for a good pasture full of gophers. I hated them. First off, they were too long and made laying prone a pain in the arse. I like to carry my rifle by it's belly. You can't do that with a big honking magazine hanging out. The whole spray and pray concept was created by the first guy to put a 25 round mag under a 10/22. The rifles accuracy was horrible, and the temptation to keep squeezing off shots was too great. I burned up alot of ammo, more than I should have. Because of that, I spent more time loading that damn thing than I did looking for gophers. I tried a speed loader, but it was akward to carry and took up precious space in my ammo pouch. I finally just used the factory flush fit magazine while in the field and the 25 rounders at the range. Even then only for awhile as the plastic feed rails wore down and turned the mags into worthless pieces of crap.
IF I were in the market for a .22 self loader, I would look at a few items. First, the 597 has a reputation for being garbage. Many have them and like them. My best bud's got one. For years he was convinced if he tightened this screw or that, adjusted the guide rods perfect, and held the rifle just right it would cycle fine. If he didn't do that, he blamed it on one of his steps. (And I guess I never held the rifle just right, as I never was able to get it to cycle a full magazine once.) Yes his is an early model, but I don't think you should have to wait and see if your rifle will fire a full mag without a hickup, and if it does that certainly shouldn't be cause for celebration.
(Now with all that being said, I was thinking of buying a pair just to have as they were selling them pretty cheap. I never did get around to that.) He has finally admited his rifle is junk and now shoots his Norinco bolt action most of the time.
The 795 is in my opinion a better rifle. It is basically the same action as the model 60, and I used to love mine. It was wonderful for thousands, upon thousands of rounds. But one day it got real dirty and I had to take it apart. It was a challenge and not for the faint of heart. It is also somthing I probably won't do anymore. If I were to suggest an autoloader to someone based on that fact, you cannot beat the 10/22 for maintanence.
