hey,

So I was shooting my 795 this weekend for the first time. Pretty fun etc., but the rear takedown screw popped out. it was jamming a bunch but I only noticed when I cleaned it after getting home.

anyways.

So I checked the marlin site, and their Cdn rep is in Qc. I called the Qc shop up, and they told me $3 for the screw and another $8 for shipping.

$11 for a screw!?

What are they, heidi klum?

So I was wondering, anyone else have this kind of problem?

Is there somewhere in Ottawa I could drive and buy the part?

And.... more importantly... does anyone know the dimensions on the rear takedown screw? Maybe I could just buy a metal screw at Home Depot or something....

Thanks for any help,

MP

Find out the length and thread and head type. I lost the sideplate screw from my 1976 Dan Wesson and refused to pay the $3 and shipping and BS so I got the particulars (#3-48x1/4" sockethead cap screw) I also ordered the same thread but in slotted fillister head while I was at it as a back up. I got the fillister head from fastenal for $1 something for ten (felt bad ordering one!) And the proper cap screw I bought from Acklands Grainger but they have a 100 screw minimum so $11 later....anybody need a sideplate screw?!!

Maybe write Marlin HQ directly and ask how damn stupid they are for letting the Qc rep act that way over a damn screw.

I like my Marlins, but I'd be ready to publicly slap them one for that.

Are you sure it's the screw and not the pot metal female end in the action that's stripped?

^x2. I wondered the same thing. I always hold the short end of the Allen key when tightening the action screws on my 795, for fear that I could strip the female end if I over-tightened. I know of at least one person who cut the short end off of all of his Allen keys and then mounts them in a small cordless drill. Yikes!

Really those screws are tough. Those actions... Not so much. Not to knock them, most cheap rimfires use aluminum/zamac/pot metal somewhere in the action, but it's not the toughest stuff for threading applications.

I say just pay the 11 bucks
that screw being loose is notorious
mine was loose out of the box as well
life lesson always tear down and clean your firearms when you first get them
then you know everything is ready to go
no help i know
cheers

Yeah I'm gonna check out a local gunsmith tomorrow... says he's got a bunch of Marlon pts lying around...if not, au revoir mes $11!

And to whoever was saying don't cry over eleven bucks... gimme a break man. Its a damn screw!! I'll pay good money when I need to but a pack of tapcons costs less than that.

Buddy fixed it for $5. Didn't have the same exact screw but I said screw it I didn't care if they matched so long as they held the action in. It was another marlin screw but he had to file down the tip a bit. Well pleased with the service.

Gunco in Ottawa was the merchant.
