Marlin front ramp screws

Purchased a used Marlin 44mag a while back and had noticed that the front sight ramp was loose. Got around to looking at it today and after taking off the front bead noticed that it only had one screw holding the ramp. Further inspection looks like someone had tried to remove the screw and drilled thru to the barrel. The gun is a lever post JM.
Guess my question is what are the issues with problem and is there anything that can be done

Take it to a qualified gunsmith and have them assess the situation. The fact it was drilled through to the barrel is very sad indeed.

Hopefully your gunsmith can tap the drilled out front sight screw to a larger size, all while trying to address any burrs this may have left inside the bore. The rifled bore may never be the same.

Lots of bubba-smiths in the gun world.......:(

Thanks. Was kinda afraid that was the case. I have shot it before a noticed this and if shot fairly well I thought.
Will definitely follow your advise and get it checked out.

This is the best solution, a new screw in that hole wont hurt anything in firing the gun that far down the barrel safety wise but as Thunder says a bur may sidetrack accuracy a bit and may cause a barrel leading issue from minor to severe in nature.
Right now, firing it isnt any different than thousands of semi's with a drilled gas port or , probably closer to a magna porting.
I wouldnt consider shortening & re-drilling /tapping as you will prob mess up your mag anchoring points that require more remedial work.

Thanks for the info. Have made arrangements for a local gunsmith to take a look at it and see what he thinks
Was kinda toying with the idea depending on price to have it shortened to a “Trapper” version. But as you mentioned not sure how the mag tube would work out.
