I had a rear williams peep site and fire sight installed by a gunsmith. He said he was quite familliar with this gun and peep sights.

The sights look just like this (but the front sight is not nearly as tall)
http://www.williamsgunsight.com/gunsights/image_88.htm

The problem is the rear peep is dialed all the way down and the gun prints 10" high at 25 and 50 yards. With target loads and 405 gr lead bullets.

The gunsmith is out of the country.
I assume one of these parts is wrong.
I could photograph my gun sights and email or post them tomorrow if anybody can help.

thanks

Hi Ruger, common problem with some lever rifles... you need a taller front site on your rifle...
My old dirty thirty did the same once i installed the williams on it too,
a replacement front blade shouldnt be more than a couple bucks at your local gun store...

Call Williams customer service dept. Tell them the exact model of gun and peep sight you have and they will tell you the exact height of front sight you need. The guys there are so well versed that they will give you the height without even looking it up. Well worth the phone call cost to get the right info and avoid having the wrong sight shipped to you by a mail order outfit.

cheers Darryl

thanks for the info...

Called williams usa 1 800 #

Talked to a very annoying rep.
He would not even listen to what rear sight I had.

But I found out front sights very in height:
.31
.45
.406
.53
.57

I have a .31

He figured or guessed I need a .53

Who has these in Canada?

A easy way to figure front site ht.....Take a peice of electrical tape make a "U", put it around the barrel and where the two top peices of the "U" join put a very thin peice of card board (make it taller than you'll need)....that will be your tempory front site....test fire with the rear site set at it's middle adjustment range....cut the front with a pair of scissors to the proper ht. determined by impact on target....with a razor blade cut tempary front site off flush with barrel (or ramp in the case of the guide gun) and add dovetail depth to that meas. and you have your front site ht.........:)
The 45-70 can be loaded with many different boolit wts. and velocity...Finding one front site ht. to cover all the above possibilities would impossible I would think...
