Hi, just looking for imput. My father recently passed, I inherited a Marlin Model 57m from him (among others). It has seen little use (if any) but has some rust from a life time of living in a case. Is it worth hanging on too? I honestly can't see myself ever using it. I'm a bolt guy. Thanks for your input.

My condolences on your father's passing.

I had a quick look at gun broker & there is only 1 listed at $895, and it is in excellent 98% condition.

Depending on how bad the rust is, maybe the one you inherited is worth half that? Maybe?

Personally, I could never let my father's rifle go. But that's just me. Is there someone else in the family who might like to have his rifle?

Keep that Marlin lever.
Nawt rare per say, but not common either.
Spray some Fluidfilm on the whole rifle and let it sit over night.
0000 steel wool or extra fine and gently go over the whole unit.

Losing a father is not an easy thing.

Oh I have the special ones set out. They will never leave. But he was an accumulator. Waaay yo much stuff. Like a model 88. No mags... ?!?!

There is lots of information on the internet. Friends had one an as youth it appeared to function fine.
You show yours as a 57M which is the 22 Magnum. There were series with and without serial numbers and there were steel and aluminum actions.
The magnet test will help you.
During the internet search, Maynards had one listed in 2019.

I'd say if you have the space then hang on to it, at least for a while. It is certainly not going to decrease in value, and you may find it more interesting after a year or three has passed.

But then, I'm probably also an accumulator.

Super fine steel wool and lots of oil

I lost some hand down rifles due to a poor storage choice - by the time they were found to be damnaged they were heavily rusted.

I hope its not that badly rusted. Can you throw up a pic?
I too would be interested in attempting to restore it it you choose to part with it

Cheers.

Thanks for the input, I did get further details, it, as well as the model 88 were owned by a friend of his. They spent a good portion their lives in a wall, in cases (1996 until 2019) neither were shot after being sighted in. I would suppy pics but I can't seem to add them. It is a steel receiver. I have managed to get the bulk of the rust off. But I find it shows far worse in the pics. I am definitely going to sell it and the 88. The 88 has much less heavy oxidation, and is more of a speckling. But I'm sure with no mags for the 88 it will be here a while. And I still have many to go through. 15 surplus firearms is overwhelming.

Humm.. adding pics on this site stinks.

No, adding pictures on this site only works if you are a paid up 'member'. The message that you have not contributed enough, should read that you have not contributed enough "Cash"!

Otherwise, you have to host the pictures on a third party hosting site.

I have a membership, 25.00 as I can't be bothered, never used a picture hosting thing, there is a sticky about it.
than just post pictures direct.
I collected Marlins for a while, had a couple 57 LR, never seen a 22M in one of those.
They don't sell like a 39 would ,as those have gone nut last while.
Do some checking on the price of that if you are selling Even with some rust it should fetch good money.
