please help me decide.

Stainless - less maintenance. the gun will be carried a lot so no worries about finish wear, scuffs or where i put it down. but it looks so non-traditional - it almost seems sacrilegious to buy a levergun in stainless :D
anyone know exactly what parts of the stainless 336SS are stainless and what is nickel plated?

Blued - more maintenance, possible corrosion. but IMO there are few rifles as attractive as a well used lever action with most of the bluing worn off.

is everything other than the metal type identical on these? ie: fit & finish, machining of internals, average stock quality, action smoothness?

which would you guys pick, and why?
 
was looking for primarily a light handy rifle to carry around - no scope. the extra 4" of barrel, weight, etc of the XLR wouldnt be ideal.

argh you guys are killing me...

I vote blued since you won't be trying to compromise a good looking scope to put on it. Not too many to pick from as it is when you want a 1.5-4.5X to top it with, let alone trying to get one that isn't black.
 
as much as i like stainless and i own several stainless synthetic bolt guns i still like the look of blue and wood on a lever gun. as practical as the xlr's are the older worn pre safety blued marlins win it for me. i have marlins in 444 and 30 30 and a win in 307.
 
Judging from what you wrote in the first post in this thread, you are already pretty much sold on the blued version. If you really do like it better, then don't worry about what we all think and just get it! :D
 
a 336ss with a walnut stock is right ###y, one of my favorite long guns. If you havent seen one in person, have a look; seeing one up close was enough to sell me on it.
 
I got a .45-70 guide blued, I wouldn't part with it for nothing.. Just me though. I would agree with the statement, it does look better than SS but realistically, if you're using it constantly it'll probably last better. LR
 
the XLRs certainly do not appeal to me.

IMO for a hunting rifle, I would prefer stainless. They protect better and can be put away wet & you can be a bit more tougher with them.

I have a 336c blued though. LOL
 
yeah thats the dilemma :)
stainless wont rust... but if you protect the blued from rust and just let it.. wear... then youll end up with a wicked looking gun.

maybe ill just go buy a used blued one that someone has already worn all the finish off of and has broken in nicely :)

i notice blued is finally edging out the stainless in the poll.
