it seems the Marlin model 60[tube fed has an excellent reputation for accuracy and function -does the model 597 [clip fed] share this?The reason I ask is the clip model is preferable for a truck gun for potting grouse on roadsides

They are both good guns. The Marlin tend to be very accurate, but like any other gun it varies from example to example......there re "bad" marlins, but fewer of them than some others...so the Marlins developed a reputation for accuracy. That said, why not look at the Marlin Papoose? GREAT truck gun...and while not as accurate as the previous two, all three will shoot "minute of gropuse head" at 25 yards.
I've got a 597 I'm quite happy with, though it's not been off the range yet.
I believe there's been many a thread reference 60's, 597's, 10/22's, etc.
You'll find advocates of all these, as well as those who'll dismiss them.
All are reliable and a good buy for what you'd be paying.
That said, if you really like what you hear about the Marlin, go for the 795. Same action (I think) as the 60, but is clip fed and a few bucks cheaper.
I've also got an old Cooey model 600 that shoots circles around most newer guns.
(As an aside, I've recently been lured by the dark side into buying a 10/22 with a folding stock 25 round mags on order )

25 round mags on order )accually,I transposed the numbers-it was a comparison with the marlin 795 [clip ]and marlin 60 [tube]I was interested in.I believe the marlin 7000 was the heavy barrel-not sure what ,if any advantage that offers over the 795[lighter barrel]
Only complaint I have about the Marlin 795 is the trigger is brutal. Same would go for the 60, as I believe they have the same trigger group. Lots of instruction on rimfirecentral as to how to lighten it, but I haven't tried any yet.

As for the difference between it and the 60; the mag fed option is what sold me. I also own a tube fed .22 (Henry) and for all the fun it gives me, I absolutely hate the fact that I can't load and unload it it as quickly as my 795.
As for accuracy, it shoots better then I do so I can't say just how accurate it is. Probably pretty close to MOA anyway.

It was disgusting. I could pick the rifle up by the trigger without it going "click". (of COURSE it was unloaded!) But I solved the problem by cutting two coils off the end of the hammer spring. It now breaks right around 4.5 - 5 lbs. (estimate) A nice weight for a hunting rifle IMHO anyway.

Because of today's lawyer happy society. Gun companies don't want to be sued because someone drops their gun and it goes off or has any other kind of accident.

i have 8 10-22s and allways carry my marlin 795 when my daughter and i go 4 wheeling.it is (imho) the best bang for the buck in the rimfire market right now.i have had three 597s 17hmr 22mag and 22lr and ditched them all.
