Marlin Model 80 - Bolt casing crack or OK?

Is the part hard (can a file make a mark? does it take effort to do so?) It may be a crack from heat treatment, or it may have been a flaw in the barstock that the body was made of.
If you know a decent TIG welder, you could Vee out the crack and have it filled and ground back to form. If the body was hardened, then a regime of small welds with a cool down between them will make for a small heat affected zone, limiting the softening of the part overall. Some brass or aluminum rod into the cavity to keep the insides from getting crusty would be a good plan, or use back up gas.

But if it works and is not causing any problems, leave it alone. Clean it up and get on them gophers!

Cheers
