Local feller has a Marlin .30-30 for sale, he described as having a straight stock, very lightweight, 20 inch barrel, and being a model *1886*.

What do you think this gun is? Just anpother 336 with a straight stock? Was he mixed up? I'm not familiar with Marlin models, and a cursory web search revealed nothing.

Model 1893 sounds right to me. Does anyone know if there is an 1886 patent date on 1893 rifles? That could cause confusion.
Unless of course it's a model 1889 and isn't a .30-30 at all. Some non-shooters call any lever action a ".30-30"

I wasn't thinking how "336" could look like "886"!

I once had a guy sell me a rifle advertised as a "SLOPER" model.....his poor eyesight misread the "S, L OR LR" on the barrel of my Win 62 .22 rimfire.
