Anyone got some custom mods on their 336's or 1895's?

I have a 1895.
I wanna chop the barrel to 18.5", Get a large loop lever for the winter, get some XS aperture sights, and maybe the lever rail as well so I could use a scope on QR rings. Only trouble is the scope i would like is $1000.

Show and tell your customs :)

Two sources for parts to modify Marlins...

http://www.wildwestguns.com/

Wild West makes an excellent trigger for these, and can be bought through Brownells, okay to ship to Canada. Installed one on my son-in-law's .308 Express, was a HUGE improvement! Breaks like glass at about 3 lbs, zero creep.

X2, the Wild West trigger is a "must" modification. With the WWG trigger, the pull is so light and crisp that I have to warn guys who are firing it for the first time.

Got a Wild West happy trigger and bear proof extractor in my 444. Switch the stock to a grey laminate and some XS winged ghost sight (not on this pic). As already mentioned, the Wild West trigger is a huge improvement.

I don't have any custom mods to my Marlins, but check out the MarlinOwners forum --- there's lots of people there who have done some nice mods to their rifles (and posted pictures).

Not to discourage you with your plans because it can be fun to do the work yourself, but if money or time is an issue, you might be better off looking at some of Marlin's new offerings that already incorporate the big loop lever and XS sights/scope rail on the 18.5" Guide Gun platform, like the 1895SBL:

I think there's also been some limited edition runs that a couple of dealers (e.g., Prophet River) carry that might fit your needs.

Of course, that opens up the can-of-worms regarding the quality of Marlin's latest rifles, but that's another discussion.

I've seen those and like them. I also looked at the GBL when I bought mine, but I really prefer the traditional walnut and blued. I also prefer the pistol grip over the straight stock. Money is somewhat an issue ( I don't have unlimited funds for this ) but at the same time, I am willing to take it on as a long project, to balance out the cost. As well, I think there is something to be said for building your own custom gun, it makes it so much more personalized and sentimental. I know what I want to do more or less, I just wanted to see what other guys had going. Marlin Owners has some pretty slick stuff in their custom guns board.

I share your sentiments about blue and walnut, but living in the Pacific Northwest, I do appreciate stainless and laminate or plastic. I remember about a year or so ago there was a custom Marlin 1895G that had been done (I think) by Martini and Hagn. The rifle had some sort of matte grey finish similar to Cerakote and MPI fiberglass stocks --- it wasn't to my taste, but looked very practical... I wish I had kept a picture to show you.

I think one of the nicest upgrades/customizations that you can do to a Marlin is to refinish or add new wood. Some of the factory wood that Marlin puts out is gorgeous, but the Marshield finish with its muddy complexion can really cover it up.

There are a few sources for custom wood, but my favourite for fancy grade is Treebone Carving. Fancy grade wood will set you about $400+ or so dollars, but if you like wood working, I think it's time/money well spent.

I did it with my guide gun. Large loop Wild West lever, XS rail and laminated pistol grip stock.

Remember that Brownells will not ship anything to Canada that has a value in excess of $100... And WW guns will NOT ship to Canada, I asked and was met with profanity...

Stickhunter, I think I saw that Marlin you mentioned. Year or two back I stopped by Martini's shop to get some work done, and he was just finishing up a Marlin just like you're describing. Remember him mentioning the MPI stock. Pretty wicked looking rifle, eh! (Small world!)

One can do a lot of neat things to a rifle to put their own personal touch on 'em. Marlin's are one of those that lend well to this because there's so many of them out there, which makes aftermarket accessories/parts economical.

I did my own "customization" to a Rem. 700. HS Precision stock was a drop in, along with Williams bottom metal (huge improvement over the crappy original!), along with scope, etc. Had Martini Gun Makers reblue all the metal and add a target crown for about $250...bead blasted it first, really good looking and durable matte finish. Ended up with my own "custom" rifle for considerably less dough than ordering one up.

Only cautionary note is that one shouldn't mess with aspects that can affect safety unless they really know what they're doing...I learned my own lesson in this respect.

After I got the rifle put together, went out to the range. On the 40th round, I shoved the bolt home and it discharged...???????????????

Immediately took it up to Martini for a check over.

It has a Timney trigger, which replaced the original many years ago after one of them nasty experiences we've been hearing about.

Turned out that the trigger post-firing was contacting the trigger guard just enough to hang up. (new stock, new bottom metal) I'd checked for clearance, and while very close, it wasn't contacting...but I didn't check it through its travel.

Ground the trigger down a tad, no more problem.

But big lesson learned for me! (Not to mention a tad embarrassing... )

Think it's always worthwhile to share such lessons learned, hopefully avoid similar mistakes...and possibly nasty consequences.

Stickhunter I LOVE that last 1894, if you case coloured the receiver I would probably sell you my soul for that one! Don't care what caliber it is just want it. Who did what to it?

Unfortunately, all those rifles that I posted pictures of aren't not mine. They come from customers of Treebone Carving... but I agree with you that they look great!
