A friend of mine is looking to sell me his Marlin 336C (30-30). I am not sure of the exact date on it (I have not had opportunity to check the serial number), but am fairly certain it is a pre-Remlin manufacture. I would guess maybe a 2005-2006 model. I also know that it has less than 40 rounds through it. It is a real nice specimen that he took care of.

What would be a fair price? He asked $450 - I think that is kind of low. Is $550-600 more in the ballpark?

450 sounds about right to me, if it's in perfect shape. If it has minor dings and scratches I'd say 550-600 is what some generous person will sell it to you for in the EE.
Firearm values can be hard to nail down. For example IMHO Blue Book values are for the most part a waste of time. But you have to start somewhere.
Check local classifieds as values can be somewhat regional subject to availability/popularity in your area. The 336 seems pretty popular here on the island. (short ranges, little deer)
I miss my 336 and would gladly add another to the stable.
At the end of the day it's worth whatever someone is willing to pay.
