Which one between the Marlin XT 22VR and the Savage MKII FV is the better choice for target shooting? I know CZ 452 or 455 are better but I don't have the money to buy the CZ.

Savage because its rimfire's are made in Canada and they have better quality control than Marlin after Remington bought them out which is saying a lot because Savage QC is OK at best.

Target shooting - I'd stick with the Savage with a heavy barrel.

or look for a Norinco NS522 on the EE if you can find one... even cheaper and more accurate.

^is this not old news? I was under the impression that Marlin QC issues were short-lived after Remington bought the company...and most of what I heard related to the lever action centerfires. I could be wrong.

To the question~I'd probably pick a heavy-barrel Savage, but not the Mark II...a new B22FV. Check out Prairie Gun Traders, I think they list there for about $339.

Remington won the race to the bottom with marlin sadly. They had and still suffer quality control issues. Ive wanted a 795 for a while and havent come across one that has centered sights and clean crown

I have a savage mark2. It sits in an mdt chassis and is a great shooter. Better than my mark2 in 17mach2 thats in a wood stock
For the money i think savage is the best bet
They will run with the cz guns. Now with that said and some may take offense either way i believe they the guns shoot as equal. However the cz guns get a better rep because theyre fielded more by better more experienced shooters who want a higher level of fit and finish. Savage with its entry levelish price is fielded more by newer shooters and fed a cheaper line of ammo. I know this is not always the case but it is what ive observed
For me the only reason id buy a cz is cor the fit and finish of nice wood and blued steel. Some are downright beautifully stocked.

From what I've seen at gun store the QC problem for marlin were throughout their lineup. All of the Xt-22's I handled all had crooked front sight posts

I've owned a Mark II FV (22WMR) and a Mark II FV-SR. Both roughly made/finished but more importantly, neither had accuracy potential you'd ever brag about. Neither are the exact rifle the OP was inquiring about...but twice bitten... lol I've heard better things about the B22FV and not only are the ergonomics miles ahead of the Mark II series, I've read the accuracy is every bit as good..if not better. I would personally never buy another Mark II, but have been considering a B22 series rifle myself. Likely 22WMR~I have enough 22LRs. :)

I read the "Savage can shoot as well as CZ" comments before (from sources I more or less trust) but since that's never been my experience, I never offer the same comments or advice. I currently own 1 CZ452 Varmint 22LR, and a BRNO 2E 22LR and I can tell you with both rifles, I can put the bullets where they need to be. That's not brand loyalty talking, that's just a fact. lol

I’ve got the heavy barrel xt22vr and it’s been great, I definitely recommend it. With bulk federal AE sp or cci mini mags it consistently shoots 3/4” to 1/2” groups if I do my part @ 50y. There’s not much ammo it doesn’t shoot well actually, just started playing with some eley and it’s very promising for a bone stock .22. For the price vs accuracy you can’t go wrong really, I was thinking of the heavy barrel savage or the xt and went with the xt as it felt nicer in my hands and when shouldered.

Skip the Mark II, and get the B22. I got a B22 FVSR, better stock and magazine compared to the Mark II. The B22 also looks better in my opinion.

The stock savage mark2 fv does have a pretty crappy stock. I could dtill shoot mine very well. I have it in a mdt chassis now which i love. My other mark2 is a wood stocked mach2. It throws the odd flyer but it is generally very accurate as well

^how accurate is that rifle? My Mark II FV-SR...not so good. lol

Agreed, the B22s are FAR more handsome rifles.

I got around half in groups from 50m and I'm not a good shot. That's off sandbags, lots of flyers when I use a bipod though (lots of flex from the stock and touching the barrel).

FWIW. My Savage MKIIF shoots as well as my CZ 452 Style and Varmint with the same ammo, up to 100 meters. Maybe I got lucky. Have not shot my MKIIG (new receiver) at a hundred meters so cannot comment on the accuracy of newer MKIIs. Not bad for a rifle worth a third.
