Marlin or Savage?

I'm in the market for a fun but fairly accurate .22 autoloader.
I have it narrowed down to either a Marlin 795 or a Savage 64F.
Is there any appreciable difference quality/accuracy/dependability wise between these 2 rifles?
Any and all opinion's good and bad much appreciated.

I had two old Lakefield/Winchester/Cooey model 64s manufactured before Savage bought Lakefield. I also had an old Marlin 70, which was what they called the 795 back then.

Both were great shooters, no FTFs and FTEs if kept reasonably clean. The Marlin was just a tiny tad more accurate, but that could be a particularly good example, who knows?

Fit and finish were similar, but the 64 had a steel receiver (which the current Savage 64 still has) and the 70 795 had or has an aluminum one.

The 64 has a heavy cast alloy magazine body (could be steel, verify that if important to you) compared to the Marlin`s more common pressed sheet steel mag.

If prices were the same, I`d toss a coin, to choose between the two.
 
I prefer the marlin action. It's a bit more complex but is very reliable and marlin barrels are typically the most accurate out of the box of the cheaper semis.
 
My little Papoose Marlin is great and extra accurate for a takedown, Marlin would be my choice... Cheers. JP.
 
FWIW i own a marlin 60 and a friend that i shoot with owns a 64, accuracy is questionable with the savage, the other issues he has had a ton of fail to feed with several different ammo manufacturers. the 60 on the other hand, accurate and eats anything i feed it, unless i let it get really dirty than i get fail to eject issues.

Fear mongering. It's not as bad as people believe it is, the q/c issues happen with any low budget manufacturer. It never used to be that way with marlin which is why their old reputation was so good. The truth is I knw several people who have newer marlins and love them. They are a solid engineering design.
 
Go with the marlin

I have a year old 795SS. Awesome little semi! Accurate as heck. It loves Americian Eagle & Federal bulk ammo. The only issue is the scarisity of accessories. Finding extra clips has been a year long task with no success.
 
I adore my 64...first .22 (and still fav) is a Cooey64.

That said, it was almost half the price of a Marlin. Now, with costs being close (Marlin cheaper in some locations) I'd be on the Marlin! My only "regret parting with" .22 is a Marlin 70HC.

Shorter rifle, thicker sights (front sight like my thumb) but, otherwise, an excellent semi.22.

Even though I have a couple of semis, like you I adore my Cooey 600 bolt because it was my very first rifle as a kid and it still shoots extremely well.
