I was just reading a thread here about wheather someone should get a henry or marlin for first .22 and another poster said that marlins quality has been excellent for the last 50 on the model 39a which got me thinking...
- 1984 i bought my first bigbore. It was, and still is a marlin 375 win lever. Being very young and nieve i could not understand why i couldnt hit the broad side of the barn with it. Brought it back to dealer as it was purchased new and the thief charged me $20 to sight her in. When it came back i noticed the rear sight had been "pushed" over quite abit. He said it was normal to do this. Again... being 18 i thought this was what gunsmithing was all about. About a year later this situation was brought up again. Long story short.. rifle was shipped back to factory and a new barrel was installed as they found that the original barrel was installed too tight thus causing it seat sideways abit. So.. to this day she works like a charm and knowing that the dealer back then is out of business makes me like it that much more.
- 1988 my uncle gave me his nearly new 5 year old marlin 39a. He is abit excentrick (sp?) and was pissed as the rifle as it was allways jamming after he loaned it to his nephew (my cousin). He noticed the screws were taken out and was pissed at my cousing for doing so and blamed him for it not working right. He gave me the rifle as a gift and hoped that it worked better for me. Some weeks later i went and tried it out and sure enough on the second round the action ceased up and the round jammed. Took it to the smith and $80 later he polished the inside and installed a new part. He claimed the part was defective and wasnt in sink with all others thus causing the jam. To this day she's the most accurate rimfire i have. The action isnt as smooth as my winchester but i blame that on the faulty workmanship on marlins part. Talked to my cousin about this some time later and he remember borrowing the gun and it jamming on him so he tried taking it apart to fix it. Said he couldnt find the problem and gave it back to my uncle a few days later where this story begins.
Long story short..... 2 NEW marlins in my family and BOTH were factory defective. I have not bought a marlin since. Bad luck on our part? Maybe. So im wondering if anyone else has had quality issues with Marlin in the past?
