Hi all,

I'm curious to know who else in CGN-land owns one of Marlin's "Royal Canadian" series rifles?

From another site:

per Brophy's ... In 1961, Marlin started a program to expand the Canadian market. Nine models were selected for this program and the difference between Marlin's standard line and this Royal Canadian line was the Canadian models had the extra features of high-grade wood, swivels and slings, and the model 336 would have dovetail front sights rather than the ramp type. Some models had Monte Carlo stocks.

The nine models included the 336C 30-30, 336C .35 Rem, 336T .30-35, 989, 980, 99C, 57M, 57, 56, and the 55. The program didn't go well as the Canadian gov't would not issue Marlin a trademark for the Royal Canadian name.

Here are some pictures of my 1963 Marlin 336RC "Royal Canadian" in 30-30. Over the years I've seen Model 56, 57/57M, and 989 "Royal Canadians", but never another 336 so I'd love to get a roll call of what's out there.

Nice gun friend! A good friend had an 336 in 32 special and it had inlaid in the side of the butstock and (J) over an (M) intertwined in silver or pewter, not sure wich, Only problem was reciever was D&T's 6 times! Another real rare high grade collectable that was ruined by an amature gunsmith!

I have seen the MOdel 57 in a Royal Canadian, did not relize these were so rare! Thanks for the education!Dale Z!

Wow!
Would you believe only 123 Royal Canadian were sold!!!!!

Hi H4831,

Where'd you get the 123 figure and is that only for the 336 Royal Canadians? The only other production numbers that I've heard came from the forum where I originally posted the pictures of this rifle. Someone responded with the following numbers (again, I don't know what their source was):

271 - 30-30 Royal Canadians
270 - 35 Rem Royal Canadians

To other readers, please chime in if you've seen or own a Royal Canadian Marlin.

Excellent, I hadn't seen that list before, thanks! I believe those production numbers (123) are for the "Texan" (straight stock) 336 Royal Canadian. I wonder if those 123 rifles are in addition to the 271/270 numbers I posted earlier? I really should buy Brophy's book and read up about them.

Regardless, those are very low production numbers for Marlins. I would dearly like to come across one of the "Royal Canadian" Texans in 35 Rem --- that'd definitely be up in my list of "must have" rifles.
