I recently came into possession of a Marlin Model 989 Royal Canadian 22 semi auto rifle. It was my father in laws and he passed away in September. He bought it new when he was a young man, I think he said at a Canadian Tire where he worked at the time. I did a google search and it took me to the Marlin Forums and there was a bit of info there, stating the rifle was manufactured in the early 1960s, and only a few were made. Then the Canadian Government shut down the program because they did not want the words "Royal Canadian" or the maple leaf being associated with a firearm made in the USA.
While I am the only holder of a firearms license in my house, as far as I am concerned this little rifle belongs to my wife and her sister. They do not want to sell it, but I am curious what it's current value is, this one was not in a collection in the proper sense of the term, but rather it was my father in law's rabbit gun and general plinker. It works very well, is accurate, and in decent shape with normal wear and tear on it. It looks like it would accept a scope base, but I can not determine who makes a base for it or the model number I would need. And, it only has one magazine so I am interested in hunting down a couple more for spares so my boys can spend a little more time hunting rabbits and a little less time fumbling with ammo with cold hands.
Any information would be appreciated, this is a cool little gun that I am hoping my family will enjoy for years to come. Thanks guys.
