Just Wondering how this Varies in the state of Canada? I guess I should have been more specific and asked for Canadian examples.

Guns have warranties?

You won't need one on a Marlin ;)

You haven't bought more than one new
Marlin in the last couple years have you? ;)

My 1894C came from from Cabelas with a cracked buttstock near the top-tang. Rather than send it back to Cabelas who offered to replace it with a model of equal or lesser value (they sold-out of 1894C's real quick) I went directly through Marlin. They had me order a new butt-stock from WGP in alberta, I faxed them a receipt and recieved a cheque in the mail.
Can you guess who sent the cheque?...REMINGTON.

New Marlins have a 5 yr. warranty, and yes, I have had to use it. Like sun_and_steel, I bought an 1894c from SIR/Cabelas and it arrived NIB with some serious defects (e.g., chipped, ill fitting stock, uneven hammer machining, and worst of all a barrel stamp that was unevenly struck). When I phoned Cabelas, I was told to send the rifle back and wait for the next shipment (my rifle had been backordered for 4 mos. and they had already sold out again), or go through Marlin warranty.

I sent the rifle to Marlin's western service center (a gunshop in Vancouver) and called every month for a status. After six months of the rifle sitting in Vancouver, it was shipped to Marlin's eastern service center (a distributor in Quebec). At this point I was told the rifle would be replaced, but that I'd have to wait for the next shipment. Unhappy with all the waiting and having already purchased a *used* 1894c, I escalated the issue with Remington (then Marlin's new owner) who eventually agreed to swap 1-for-1 the 1894c for a Rem 700 SPS SS.

I was happy with the outcome, but very displeased with the process. I won't knock Marlin or Remington corporate as I have strong suspicions that the delays were a result of the Vancouver dealer dropping the ball. While Marlin has had an excellent reputation in the US for their warranty service, because of the small Canadian market and cross-border issues, I don't believe that level of excellence extends into Canada. In other words, until Marlin overcomes its apparent QC issues, I'd want to inspect a rifle first hand or at least have the option to return it to the retailer rather than waiting for the warranty service.

That being said, the Cabelas deal on the 1895GS is smokin' and if Marlin sends you a rifle without significant QC issues, I'm sure you'll be very happy (I'm a huge fan of Marlin rifles).

:eek:
Can't be...
:puke:

I went to do some digging I found this
http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/remington-to-acquire-marlin-firearms-58909522.html

Remington bought out Marlin in January 2008 which included H&R and NEF (they are part of Marlin). And of course, Remington is part of the Freedom Group which have been disappointing more people every year.
yup, and they were just starting to get going with a lot of customer suggested designs like the 1895sbl and gbl. i've got a 1895gs from 2005 and it's great, nice wood and have never had a problem. since the take over all you seem to hear about on the forum's is people having problem's with their 1894's, 1895's, 336's, and 39a's. freaking sad!!!! damn bean counters.

I've owned four (pre-Remington rifles). All but one had problems of some sort:

1) 1895G -> flawless.
2) 1894 -> stripped screw right from factory.
3) 1895GS -> reciever machining tolerances way out of whack causing carrier problems.
4) 1895 cowboy -> cracked butt plate.

Marlin will stand behind their warranty and fix anything you ask them to, but they have lousy quality control. Far worse than any other brand of rifle I've ever bought.

I wouldn't buy one without handling it first so you can do your own quality checks. Then you'll be fine.

Chris.

My situation exactly Stickhunter...that crooked stamping on the barrel is something to behold! :p
