hi all, i have been pondering getting this new gun this year in 45-70!...the problem is i think the barrel is too long( i shoot a 45-70g).....what would be the price to get it cut down to 18-5 inches and recrowned at a gun smith?....also, what would be the legal limit as far as cutting down the barrel?..thanks for any help..larry:)

No, you can't cut the barrel below 18.5". Other than that the 26" inch rule applies. Should cost well below $150. I'd also look into getting a laminate stock set for a standard 1895GS.

thanks for the info guys!!....found this in the browning, but only comes in 450 caliber, 20 inch barrel, with clip and no mag to worry about---no problem( since they are basically the same ballisticaly), but that means new brass/dies!!.....don't know what to do!!..   ......hello guide gun stainless laminate???....larry:)

Don't forget that you can use pointy Barnes X in the BLR. You can also use round nose bullets. Loading and unloading will also be faster and more convenient.

yup, ya got that right 1899!;) .....ah, decisions, decisions!!...i sure do like that browning!!..:D

Winchester makes a model 94 in 450 Marlin with an 18" barrel -- Model 94 Timber - LeBaron's list them in their catalog. Marlin makes a model 1895 GS stainless with an 18.5" barrel in 45-70 or in the guide gun in blue. The Marlins are listed in the SIR catalog and the blue version is $583.99 - the stainless is $709.99 Just FYI. For a decent sight radius, I would think you would want a barrel in the 18-18.5" range, but my eyes areold and I need artificial optics.

I have both a stainless Marlin1895GS(45 70) and a Browning BLR stainless laminate in .450. I have to say that the removable mag on the Browning is really convienient aside from that I would be hard pressed to pick one over the other.

Cheers,

Sean

The Browning has many advantages over the Marlin. no brainer.
i think you're right bigred!!...i do love my marlin but--that browning sure has my interest!!.....stainless and laminate---clip, can use any type of bullet, and the barrel is 20 inches!.....i do have a .308 browning bolt/micro-medallion so it will have good company...
it's going to be tough but maybe i should wait one year:mad: ...if the guidegun doesn't come out in stainless/laminate--- i think it will be time to jump ship!!:p ...larry
