Marlin XLS or Mossberg 4X4?

I want to buy a second rifle for my daughter for moose and Elk. She already has a Rem SPS .243 in a Boyd's laminate stock with some trigger work done, for deer. I was thinking of getting it in 270 win. I understand that Mossberg has new offerings in short Mag?
The Mossberg comes in a laminate stock, has an adjustable trigger, and comes with a muzzle Brake. If I could get a 270 WSM with the brake that might be nice.
Marlin has a savage style barrel nut and adjustable trigger.
WSS has a sale this week and I will be in Edm the day they have Mossberg 15% off.
If I get a savage or another SPS both need trigger work, and probably will need to get Boyd's stocks just like the other SPS (so flimsy it would bend and touch the barrel when using trees and such for a rest)
I haven't physically seen or held either of these rifles yet so I'm just going by pics and reviews.
Any thoughts.
 
Talking about the Marlin XL7?

Do not hesitate to buy the Marlin.

I have owned 2, and there is no better deal for the money.

I still own the .243 and it shoots MOA with factory stuff without issue. It has a great trigger, a very solid stock, and the fit and finish are about as good as it gets for a gun in this price range.

The other options for me would be a Savage Axis, or Stevens 200, but they lack the trigger, and both have rather flimsy stocks in comparison to the Marlin.

The Mossberg I wouldn't even consider. It isn't even on the same playing field.

Buy the Marlin and don't look back.
 
I haven't tried either, but while I haven't heard any complaints about the Mossberg, I don't hear the 4x4 owners rave about it as much as the Marlin owners do about their X7 series. Personal preference should prevail for the individual, and certainly it would be best if she could handle an example of each to check the fit and feel, but all else being equal, I'd bet on the Marlin.

I have a XL7 in 30-06 and it out shoots my Ruger, and has a very good recoil pad. the only negative part would be if you need to unload and load a few times a day since it has a blind mag. Mine is also made before Remington got there hands on them, so I wonder if there is now quality issues with these bolt actions like you hear about the lever actions.

Have any of you purchased the Marlington versions yet ?
 
I have owned both a 4x4 (walnut stock, no muzzle brake, in .270win) and an XS7 in 7mm-08.

I still own the XS7, but sold the 4x4. Not to say the mossberg wasn't a decent rifle, it was alright, but the Marlin was just plain better in about every way.
