If you don't mind a little drive when its weather permitting, it could be worth your while to make a trip to Ellwood Epps. It is about 30 min past Barrie on Hwy 11. They have a lot in stock ( somewhere around 5000 guns IIRC ) and they are a lot more knowledgable than basspro.

If you want an inexpensive .223 don't rule out the savage edge/axis package. I had one in .223 it shot great and was just over $400 tax in. Only drawback in my mind is not many mods for it ( stock etc ). I sold it for a Tikka .25-06, but I wouldn't be surprised if I got another for for plinkin.

Bass Pro sold out their stock of the Marlin XL7s (and XS7s) earlier this year. I was in on Saturday and that's what I was told.
