Marlin xt-22 not cocking

My 22 is not cocking when I cycle the bolt instead of the firing pin being held back waiting for the trigger pull. It feels like it fails to catch on something so it stays forward uncocked. I can still pull the trigger but it just clicks and won't go boom!!! The casings look like they have not even been struck or very lightly struck.

If it clicks when you pull the trigger, it is cocked and released.

Did you happen to dry fire the rifle? Dry firing a rimfire rifle can break the firing pin. I'd have it inspected by a competent gunsmith.
