I was wonder what is with the current fascination with the Marlin XL7/XS7? What rifle is it based from? Remington 700? Remington 710/770? For the last couple of years EVERYONE and their relatives have bashed anything to do with Marlin after Remington bought them. Now I see all these rave reviews of the Marlin XL7/XLS. Was this rifle developed from the ground up? I was thinking of purchasing one, and possibly a Marlin XLR but have been really hesitant due to all the negative feedback on the lever. Can someone set the story straight???

I can't speak as to what it's based on, but a week ago I bought one in 7mm-08. I loaded up some bullets and it shot groups between .6" and .75". I liked it so much, I went out and bought one in .270 win. Guess what? It shoots just as good. The gun has a really nice trigger, is dual pillar bedded, and the stock is nowhere near as flimsy as many of the synthetic stocks that are out there. It's not a cooper, but it isn't priced like a Cooper either.

Ted. :)

I think most of the problems with Marlin came with with the lever guns. Quality control was a real issue, Haven`t looked at the xl7 but reviews have been good. Judging buy the way you guys are shooting they look good.

Yeah I have heard nothing but good reviews on the XL7/XS7, and hear they are great shooters. I just wonder if it's some form of a Remmy 710/770?

There's a big hate on for Remingtons with some people.... While some people have had bad experiences I have had nothing but good experiences with any Remington or Marlin product I have owned... some of which have been purchased in the "Marlington" era....

I hear nothing but badmouthing about the rem 710/770 and rightfully so... they are throwaway guns with clunky actions constructed with too much plastic.... but then I hear the same people RAVING about the wonders of the Savage Axxis.... which is, a throwaway gun with a clunky action made with too much plastic..... advances in modern technology have made both good shooters on a budget and if they were all I could afford I would buy one because getting out shooting is the most important thing....

As for the XL7, I have handled one and didn't like the feel.... it seemed like a better built rifle than the 710/700 or the axxis... and it's also available in wood which I like... it just didn't fit me or I would have bought one....

The XL7 model came out before the merge with Remy, so its not based on any Remington . I have a pre Rem one in 30-06 which groups real well and has now replaced my Ruger as my go to deer rifle.

I have no idea if the quality of the Marlin bolt actions have changed since they merged with Remy, but I have heard enough complaints about QC on the levers that any of my future purchases of Marlin will be of their rifles made prior to the merge.

Stepped on your bag.

Brad, you better re-read and re-write, some of that sticky stuff is showing up!

Those rifles have goods features and not so good... But the important one should never forget... They are entry level rifles... Cheers. JP.

FWIW, when I had the chance to examine multiple rifles, from multiple manufacturers for fit and finish in Vegas, the thing I took away was that folks just didn't seem to have the same care about quality. Pretty much every manufacturer for example had rifles on display with barrel channels that were anything but parallel to the barrel. That goes for wood, composite, whatever.
I found loose screws, dents (could have been show dents) and other little things, like the sharp edges on the levers of the Marlin lever guns on display.
You'd think that when you were going to a major show like SHOT, you'd take the time to select rifles that were perfect, even if the run of the mill were not.

The exception and it doesn't really prove anything was Winchester. All that really proves is that I didn't see anything though, I may have missed something, or they may have selected their display carefully.

It's a mass produced industry, and that means you're probably going to have to pay close attention to your individual rifle before you buy it.

The XL7/XS7 is a new action that Marlin devised by adopting many of the best attributes of other common actions around.

The extractor design is a little weak, IMO, but other than that, it's a great rifle.
