This single shot rolling block rifle was built on the Martini block action (a modification of the American Peabody action) and a rifle barrel by Alexander Henry. Early rifles built prior to 1885 used a fragile rolled cartridge case while later post 1885 versions used a solid case. The rifle was chambered for the.557-450 cartridge that used a paper patch bullet. The British build these rifles with three different buttstock lengths and marked the ½” shorter than standard rifles with an “S” on the stock while longer stocks were marked with an “L”. Standard length buttstocks were not marked. Martini-Henry rifles and carbines were used by British military forces all over the world during the latter quarter of the 19th century.
Produced by Enfield, BSA, and LSA.
Introduced in 1887, this Mark was fitted with a longer lever, a thinner breech block modified extractor, narrow buttstock with bayonet fitting to accommodate a P1887 sword bayonet. Weight is about 9.25 lbs.
