I know it's old for a milsurp but I am looking at the gurus for info. It is a 1886 M-H MKIV. I can't figure out what the buttstock markings are. And not sure where the serial is hiding

With a little research I found 1 other rifle with CLVII (Roman numeral 157) so being more then one with the same number would it be safe to assume it's a unit marking? But from where?

The long lever also indicates it saw Equatorial service. Not always though. Considering when those rifles were built, they are very strong. Lots converted to relatively high pressure cartridges such as 303 British and others with even higher pressures.

The rifle appears to be complete which is nice. If the bore is in VG or better condition it should shoot well.

Del Selin's gunshop in Vernon, BC who is a paying site advertiser sells an insert which allows the use of a 45 Long Colt cartridge with reasonable results and much cheaper and easier than getting the reloading kit and rolling your own.

Nothing conclusive, but large letters and numbers stamped into the butt stock wood are often from India service.

Yeah spent a fair amount of time looking around the Internet. Seen 3 other rifles with identical stamps. Haven't found anything. Like most say it was probably an indian thing. But who knows what

I have one marked FCD over DTKPOL

FCD = (Finance Commission Division) Gov’t of India
DTKPOL = (DTK - DUTTAPUKUR, POL - Sector of the city)

A friend that I work with from India (Military) said these Martini's where used by Security Guards in all sectors of the government.
