Hi Guys,

I was wondering if any of you know where to get a Mas 36 rear sight leaf? My mas currently shoots quite significantly to the left at 50 metres and wanted to get the appropriate rear sight leaf for the MAS 36. Does anyone know in Canada where one can purchase them?

No Canadian source I've ever seen. Numrich or Sarco in the US might have them. They ship here.

Some on Ebay too from time to time.

Unless you have a special Mas 36 rear sight, windage is adjusted by drifting the front sight. In your case from right to left.

The MAS 36 series of rifles was intended to be zeroed in at the factory.

There was no adjustability left or right for either front or back, as the French army feared its soldiers would mess up the zero if they started toying with it themselves.

So they opted to have different rear sights with holes drilled at different horizontal positions.

Once they sighted one in, it would stay.

Problem is, during refurb, they seemed to not do this sighting process, and gave the rifles mixed sight holes, often they just replaced them with the "model 1" which has a hole directly in the middle.

So, long story short, it's normal. If you must, find one on eBay, or another gun parts store. That being said, the one you get may be worse than the one you currently have on there.

Never try to drift the front sight on a MAS.

Somewhere in my "reading" travels I found a reference saying that the front site was driftable. Not so. I made a little 2 pronged tool to get the hood off only to discovered the front sight on mine is fixed. It was shooting about 3" left at 50 yds. My nephew was sending an order off to Numerich and ordered some rear leafs. One of them corrected the problem perfectly. Some where I have a copy of a chart (en Francais) indicated which leaves are required to correct both windage and elevation issues. Also if I remember correctly there is a difference in the leaves between early models and post war.

The sight chart is here:

EDIT:
Value of offset
N = 0 (centered)
-4 or +4 = bring the group 135mm down or up at 200M
-8 or +8 = bring the group 270mm down or up at 200M
D4 or G4 = move the group 135mm to the right or to the left at 200M
D8 or G8 = move the group 270mm to the right or to the left at 200M

My rifle appears to be shooting to the left. So does that mean I need a D or a G. I am assuming that let's say my shot hits g8 having a n rear sight. That means I need a d8 to fix this correct?

That is very interesting as is the chart. My Mas 36 had a front sight that was adjustable with a drift. It was a pain to do so because the fore end cap was part of the front band. I guess the sight on mine was unique??? There were Farsi markings on it so who knows. I never had to touch the sights on the other two I sold last summer so I didn't even think to look. Thanks for this information. Sounds like a good way to complicate things but when a fixed sight allows you to shoot to point of aim it is idiot proof and reliable.

If your group is to the left you need a D4 or D8. It's my understanding that the "D" leafs move the group to the right. I forgot to post this info with the pic:
