I’ve always viewed them as one of those odd, post war semi autos that were transitional from bolts to battle rifles, like the FN-49.
Still I’ve admired them, but always from afar, as they seem too few and far between.
I figured they are not so much as rare, just scarcely traded.
One came up in EE recently going for over $2k:sok2 (ok, admittedly with a decent amount of kit included, but still...)
I saw it early and passed thinking it will get bumped a few times and come down a half dozen hundred or so...guess not.
I suppose with Garands at around $2k and Enfields at $1k, this is the new normal?

Thought?

The MAS 49/56 is one of those rifles where it is likely cheaper to buy in the States and import than it is to buy here.

In regards to the Garands and Lee Enfields, most people will have a very hard time selling at those prices (especially the Garands). I suspect a big part of why those Garands sold so quickly at 2400$ (once you add taxes and shipping) is the fact they could buy them on credit, as opposed to most used sales where you need cash in hand.

They seem like pretty slick rifles, were apparently well liked, and had pretty amazing longevity considering it was essentially a pre-WWII design carried on the front lines into the late 70's.

I'd love to add one to my collection however they have become something of an expensive proposition.

They are pretty great!! Haven't had the chance to fire mine yet. I bought a full kitted one for $2500 2 years ago. Pics don't show the 3 extra mags, or aiming corrector. It's in almost perfect condition after refurb and looks, by the lack of wear on the receiver rails, bolt and follower, that it hasn't been shot since then. Very well built rifle! Can't wait to try it out!

Did you get instructions on mounting and adjusting the scope? I have the same kit which was unfiired after refurb until I recieved it. They are a nice rifle to shoot.

I can't remember if there were instructions on the scope. I'm thinking no, but I'll have a look. I pretty much got it, made sure it was well coated with froglube, and then put it in the safe. I'll have to pull it out and have a good look at it. From one of the pictures of the left receiver, it looks like it went through refurb twice, but I can't make out the dates. I'll have to see about that as well. I bought a new spring loaded firing pin for it to avoid slam fires with commercial ammo as well.

Not sure about the scope being through refurb. I'll look to see.

Just in case you did not know. These scopes have a specific way to adjust them and are easy to destroy by improper adjustment . I found the adjustment procedure online. Did your scope come with the shims and adjustment key?
My scope had not been through a refurb. I Followed the mounting and adjustment instructions with no issue. Scope holds zero perfectly with no issues.
If you decide to use reloads full length resizing is a must.

Ok, I didn't know that. I will have to look it up and print it off. Thanks for letting me know. Not sure about the shims, but the adjustment key is in the little pocket in the top of the scope case. the scope was already mounted in the rings when I got it, so it may have the shims in there already. Not sure if it's been fired, so I don't know if the scope has been sighted in yet.

the scope mount unit were made for the legion and never in any other units. i may have somewhere the manual in french for it ...

the same scope was mounted on frf1 ...

Here's a picture of mine. It has the proper cheek piece. All of the scoped 49/56 were supposed to have it added when they went through the arsenal. But it appears they are fairly rare. Definately helps in getting a decent cheek weld.
