Are there any MAS49 collectors here? Hoping to pick one up, but want to know if it's a good rifle to shoot? I'm into French rifles for a long time now, hoping for the rares these days. Thanks guys.

Apparently, they are rare in Canada, but a good supply in the US. Hence the HUGE price difference between the countries. While they take awhile to sell in the US as they are not heavily sought after, here in Canada for some reason they hold a price of a super Garand ???? I love semi autos and I have wanted one for years, but no chance in hell am I ever going to pay that gross price, so I will sadly do without. Yes, you can buy US and have them cleared and shipped here, but, by the time that happens the price is a joke because of all the handling fees. Great gun, terrible prices. IMHO

I’m in the process of buying one and yeah the price just makes me sick :(
But what do you do, if you want one you gotta pay unfortunately
The ones that come up for sale always seem to get sold even at the high prices
Don’t worry after I buy mine something will happen and a surge of them will come in from somewhere and they will be cheaper! Such is my luck lol

In that case of your luck being as such, can you "also" buy an FN-49?...

MAS 44, MAS 49, MAS 49/56. Yup they exist in Canada but in small numbers. Maybe numbered in the dozens of each, with Syrian 49s more common because of Israeli captures.

The problem is French 7.5 was really uncommon ammunition for a long time, and now Privi is available but pricey. The converted 49/56 is a 7.62, so shooting it is much less of a problem. However, the free floating firing pin in the family means even NATO specification cartridges will slam fire!

I do not own one but have a friend who does.

have shot it several times and found it good to shoot. Recoil is relatively mild, ergonomically comfortable and as accurate as any other milsurp (3 moa ish). As far as I am concerned the only draw back is ammunition supply. Not much available and expensive. Can be reloaded but like many military semi autos the rifle is hard on brass

Love my 49/56. But as mentioned, they do like to slam fire. But the firing pins can be shortened slightly, and that generally solves the problem. A fellow that served with the French military told me that the sniper variant was only issued to the foreign legion. The cheek rest pictored is
original, and they are rarer than hens teeth.

Fargone4sure; that is a fantastic rifle!

I've got a 49 - the buttstock that was on it when I got the gun was a cobbled together abomination
I managed to source a NOS replacement in France on Ebay and landed it for 35 bucks!!
This is a pic with the bubba stock, it looks better now (can't find a current pic)

Nice 49, love the styling of them. Yes, every once in awhile you can get really lucky on parts. $35 for a butt stock was a steal indeed.
I scored a spare mag at a tiny gun show for cheap.

The trigger group of the MAS rifles is simplicity! So few moving parts. The gas tube is open from the bore to the breech.

I have an original MSE, or “Sniper” variant.

Although it was techcally more of a DMR. As for yours that’s an unusual setup, a cheek piece was not issued with the fixed stock to my knowledge - only on MSE variants.

The true marksman rifles were used by select individuals and could be issues anywhere.

If anyone has specific questions I can help :)

I lived in the USA 1998-2001, which corresponded with the arrival of a big shipment of surplus MAS 49 rifles and their ammunition. For a while they were as common at gun shows I attended as SKS rifles in Canada. This makes it very hard for me to think of them as rare and sought after, though if I give my head a shake and stop to think about it I remember that was a different time and place, and I have seen at most one up here, ever.

Mine was in the original caliber, it came with 20 boxes of ppu ammo even.

It was a nice gun, light recoiling and seemed to be rock solid reliable. The sights were decent but the trigger left something to be desired.

I personally like an svt or a garand more.

I'm a ww1 and transitional period collector so the the MAS didnt fit into my collection and my brother had to have it so I let it go down the road.

Can't keep them all.

Thanks for the reply. I just love carbines and semi autos. I love my SVT, Garand, VZ52/57, Hakim, AG42B, SKS ! One day, hopefully before I die, running out of time, I will find a nice shooter that I can afford and enjoy ! To those that have them, enjoy them !
