This may seem like a silly question but I was wondering what is the performance of match ammo on game. Like deer, moose even cayotes.
Would match ammo be a practicle choice?
Let say if one was to use his 308 700P that has been zeroed with Hornady 168gr AMAX bullets?
Federal Gold match ammo uses the Sierra Match king bullet, would this round expand?
Remington uses a boattail hollow point, would this work on game?
I'm thinking that the Sierra Match King would not be legal or effective since(correct me if I'm wrong) isn't it the same bullet but in 556 that the US military uses in it's new 77gr round and it was shown to not expand.
Sorry for the ill formed question but I'm awfully confused about all of this.
Thanks for all the replies.

You are coorect. Match bullets are not designed to use for hunting. The bullets are not designed to expand and the cores are likely to sperate. They are pretty good for varmints though and could be used effectively for coyotes.

I've heard that match grade bullets break up on impact with dense muscle tissue, and bone. You should stick with soft-points or some kind of purpose built hunting ammo. There's a good assortment of bullets out there if you want to load your own, and tune up a load for your match rifle..... could be a fun project!

You noted a few factory loads, so I assume you aren't handloading. If handloads are an option, Berger bullets have a good reputation for being very accurate and consistent with good performance on game. They do note which of their projectiles are suitable for hunting and which are not. Those that are listed as not suitable for hunting are still desireable varmint bulllets.

Most of the manufacturers like Hornady and Sierra do not recommend their match bullets for hunting.
That being said THEE bullets of choice for most of us long range hunters ARE in fact Sierra Matchkings and Hornady Amaxs.
By law in Alberta they are legal to hunt with being either tipped or hollow point bullets.
Last weekends hunting saw 2 dead deer, 1 at 153 yards killed with 168 gr Amax from a 308 and 1 dead deer at 700 yards with a 300 gr SMK.
In answer to your question as to whether SMKs expand YES they do, as the exit holes are always much larger than the entrance holes.
I killed many animals in Africa with SMKS as well as most N.A. game.
I know several other forum members here that also use match bullets for hunting, check "long range hunting" forum for alot more info on this subject.
