I have a question about match fees. (I am new to competing) I was wondering if the match fees that one pays to enter the match just covers the cost of the match itself or (on average) provides for trophies or other prizes to top finishing competitors?

Generally speaking, the match fee covers the whole cost of running a match with hopefully a little left over to put some $$ in the bank account. More than likely, you will not see trophies or other prizes at Level 1 or Level 2 IPSC matches. And more than likely you will see trophies and other prizes at Level 3 IPSC matches.
At my Level 2 match we have been fortunate enough to have a few good sponsors and we were able to give out some nice door prizes by means of a "double-blind draw".
