This past weekend, OSA tested Matches 1-16 scaled for .22rf at MilCun. All targets were reproduced in sizes appropriate for shooting at 100, 75, 50, 25 and 15m. Shooting positions are unchanged, snap and rapid timing is the same, timing for movement is reduced, because of the shorter distances involved. The Service Conditions rulebook is being rewritten to suit. Based on experiences this weekend, fine tuning is occurring. When finalised, the rulebook and target files will be made available.
All targets are placed on a single 4' frame, for each stage. For example, for the 200/25m stage, there are sighting and record targets for deliberate, snap and rapid and a record rundown target. Scoring is recorded on the target, when the relay advances after Match 4. This eases administration of the matches. The other stages are 300/50m, 400/75m and 500/100m. The rundowns are fired at 15, 25, 50 and 75m. Obviously there is less running, but scrambling up and getting into position are the same.
The intent is to provide service conditions practice and competition without a fully equipped centrefire range, or to allow service conditions type shooting without a centrefire rifle.
Some observations: The shooting is not easier. An AR with a conversion kit may not be sufficiently accurate with the longer range targets exactly scaled. A dedicated .22lr upper on an AR would be ideal. With appropriate sights, a decent rifle like a 10/22 is acceptable, although handling is different. Because most .22 rifles will not have the equivalent of a 5/30 magazine, field expedient rests were allowed (no bipods).

Because of other commitments, there will be a delay before these are available. But yes, the rulebook and target files will become available.

Well done!

This is really good news, and I'm glad someone is thinking and acting for the future of the sport and competition.

We've talked about doing this here in Calgary before... nice to see someone sort it out. Please post the details and reduced targets :)

We do shoot .22s back to 200m.
Another club in ON is shooting .22s to 300m.
Here is the problem which has arisen with the exact reduced scale Matches 1-16.....
Basically .22 rifles - either ARs with conversion kits, or regular semi auto .22 rifles - are simply not accurate enough to score well on exactly scaled targets at the reduced distances. The last time we shot the course this past season, a couple of us used the .223s we use for SR competition. The centerfires simply outshot the .22s on the scaled targets.
Either the scaling of the targets has to be changed - larger targets - and/or the distances have to reduced, everything 50m and in.
A reduced course with .22 rifles has great potential for training, or competition. Centerfire SR range requirements limit the number of suitable ranges, while most any club range can handle .22s 100 and in.

We were hoping that it would not be necessary to buy or build a dedicated .22 rifle for this sort of competition. Avoiding sticker shock to get involved was a thought. We wanted to be able to attract more shooters.
Probably easier to rework the course of fire than to expect people to equip themselves with a rifle for the event.
Of course, a good reason to buy another rifle is never a bad thing.
If I were going to build one, I think I would use a dedicated .22 upper with a quality barrel. That way sights and ergonomics would be the same as my centerfire SR.
