got my matchlock today.

here is some pics after the unboxing. it was covered in a preservative. I got most of it off but there is like a thin wax protecting the metal parts that will take awhile to get off. I don't wanna scratch it.

Looks great!! She will look much better after shes been fired thousands of times, dropped, scratched and generally heavily used.

Have you watched Alatriste yet??

nope i haven't seen it yet but i will next time i rent some movies.

i am going to call a gunsmith and hope i can get the guns flash hole drilled next week. then i have to buy all my black powder supplies!

Why use a gunsmith.....??? Take the ramrod and put it down the bore and measure with your finger at the rear how far it goes to gague FIRST OF ALL if the breach is properly placed.

Then take yonder dremil with the proper sized bit "start small" , Use a marker and mark the spot you want to drill, take a nail and a hammer to mark the spot and then drill the hole........

I have done it dozens of times, pretty darn easy, I cant imagine what a "smith" would cost you to drill the touch hole???

After that pop the barrel out and take some tube measurements , strap it to a stout log or tree out in the bush and load and fire it a few times and measure it again.

Sounds far more complicated then it is....Its totally easy, save your money for the 30 bucks a lb goex.

thanks for the advice but I'm going to stick with a gunsmith. I don't want to mess it up. better he checks it out.

there is a few sites with tips on how to make it. also I found a place that sells it. but right now I am going to try some different kind of ropes to see how they burn.

The location of the flashpan also affects where the touch hole may be positioned. Check to see where the touch hole can be, taking into consideration both breechplug face and flashpan.
Might be an idea to pull the breechplug, and inspect breeching.

Forty odd years ago, I made a reproduction of the fishtailed butt matchlock in the collection of the Royal Ontario Museum. 14 lbs, 48" .75 caliber barrel. Interesting thing to shoot.
Incidentally, be really careful shooting a matchlock.
Don't know where the gun is now; it was purchased by the federal gov't for an historic site. It would be interesting to see it again.

no shooting it yet but I did find some nice cord. my dad was using it to tie up our pool cover. I got some of it and it burns real nice and slow.
I hope next weekend to be able to shoot it.
