Hi Guys.
I need to make a set of nipples for a cap and ball revolver.
What steel would you recommend for them?
Thanks.

I've made nipples from drill rod. O-1, W-1 etc.

Why not just buy them from TOTW, Dixie, etc? There are nipples you can't buy. And rethreading might not be a good idea.

I could go and buy nipples. That’s no fun.
I would prefer to make a nipple out of 10 cents worth of steel instead of paying $5 or $6 US for one.
Thanks Tiriaq for your help.

I make them out of 5/16 stainless rod. Probably 316 stainless but not sure, but have made lots of them over the years. Revolver nipples are a bit fussy because if they are too long when the cap is on, the cylinder won't turn and if they are a trifle too short, the hammer does not hit the cap hard enough. In answer to Brutus, in my case I collect / accumulate antique rifles and shotguns and usually have to chase the threads out with a series of oversize taps then make nipples to suit
