Just bought this 71/84 Mauser bayo, any idea what it is worth?

You could be correct, sorry.

I have only ever seen the long 71/84 bayos. I have only read about the shorter ones being factory converted. But it is probably that they shortened older longer ones, and made new shorter ones...

Thus, I really don't know what it's worth.... I guess what the market will bear? Maybe check prices on Ebay and average all the realized auction bids?

Cool nonetheless.

I love the 71/84!

the bayo in your picture is a mod 71, they go for $300 plus in good shape.
They are more common than the mod 71/84, that's why I am not sure what they are worth.

I learned something. Thanks. Didn't realize the long bayo was just the Mod.71, thought it was 71/84.... :embarrassed:

Looked online, It still seems that the 71/84 bayos are selling for $150-$300. That doesn't mean that's what it's worth, but what a few of them have sold for recently...

Yours looks to be in fantastic condition, so I'm sure a higher premium could be demanded. ($300+)?

The 71/84 bayonet was adopted in January 1884, but because of the enormous stock of mod 71 bayonets and converted Chassepot bayonets, only Bavaria really issued the mod 71/84, the other German states used the old style bayos and put the 71/84s in storage.
Later the 71/84s were used with the 1888 commission rifle (71 bayonets were used as well, but to a lesser extend).

I checked some of my reference books and mentions the 71/84 bayonets were manufactured with the long and short fullers.
The nickel plated bayonets were private purchase and could be found with engraving.
The price could be $150 to $250.
There are any number of differences in their manufacture.
