I'm new to reloading, only reloaded *my m1 Garand.I found a recipe that works great for my m1 now I'm looking for a recipe for my m38 1941 Turkish Mauser. So far I've shot surplus 8mm with no problems except a few misfires due to the hard primers(weak firing pin spring I assume)I recently acquired some Norma 8mm brass,I have primers and powder(imr4895,imr4064,imr4350)if any of you would like to help me with powder selection and bullet weight 150,175,200 grn? All advice would be greatly appreciated! All I'm going to do is plunk paper targets so I am leaning towards 150 or 175 grn fmjbt.

Thx again

Chris

I have a modern action in 8x57JS, and I have found 4350 to work well with any bullet over 180 grains.
But the real winners in my rifle are Vihtavuori N150 and N550.
Top velocities with no unusual pressure signs.
For the lighter pills, IMR 4064 or IMR 4895 will work just fine.

i cut down 3006 cases to 8mm mauser i pull the bullets and powder from my 1950s cheap surplus ammo . i use wra lr primers. so 198 gr bullets. 41.5 surplus powder and my converted cases. at 220m 9 out of 10 shots hit the gong

You can trim 3006 cases to fit 8mm Mauser?I have loads of 3006 brass.I guess you trim them down then resize them with your 8mm dies?
Thanks for the info everyone, please keep it coming!

Great info!thx Eagleye.

yeap you can trim 30.06 cases down to 8mauser or 308. but since your lowering the neck towards the body of the case you will end up with a thick neck that you have to thin. i use drimil Thin Metal cut blade and once its cut to size i lube and neck size the case slowly.

Sounds like enough work...are 8mm mauser cases that hard to find these days ?

8x57 brass is available. At risk of getting flamed, I'll suggest Wholesale or Bass Pro. I've got approx. three lifetimes' supply of new brass and surplus ammo, so I guess I can talk.:p

i know its not hard to find, first of all i like experimenting, second ive got tons of 30.06 sitting everywhere and ive got lots of time on my hands for now.:D you should try it. ive gotten better accuracy with my converted 30.06 cases than the normal 8mm mauser cases.

good to know.....I can sympathize about having some time and the right tools/materials, (heck I did the same converting 223 rem into 223 rem but that was less work). I just havent' really tried to source out any 8mm brass in years.

Made some 9 x 57 for a relative a while back by stretching a batch of the 8 x 57's which I bought from Higginsons. Now I'm thinking it might be fun to start a project using your 30 06 idea. These projects are great for the ego :D.
