Hello, I have came across a carl gustav mauser in .223 its not it great shape as the receiver has been drilled and tapped a bit. My issue however lies in that the extractor does not grip the rim of the cartridge merely just shaves brass off of it. Any advice on what do do would be greatly appreciated.

You may have just a screwed up extractor but don't load the ammunition hot as I believe it exceeds recommended pressures for a 96.

A Carl Gustav mauser was made for a 6.5x55 cartridge which has a .480" diameter rim. A .223 Remington has a .378" diameter rim. An original Swede extractor would need about .050" added to the extractor lip to work reliably. Then would need the "rim" on opposite side of bolt face built up the same .050" and then turned in lathe to appropriate diameter. Do you know anyone with a lathe that does TIG and can heat treat??

The Mauser extractor was designed to have the case rise out of the magazine and slip under the lip of the extractor.

Does the rifle have a tray to hold the round where the magazine would be? If so, place the rounds there, put your left thumb on the rounds, and then close the bolt. The resistance of your thumb should help the bolt face pick up the round.

Is the "shaving" being caused by the extractor pushing over the case on the way closed?

If you re-barrel, there are lots of calibers. I made a nice one in 358 Win.

Go to a Gunsmith. Have him extend the hook on the extractor.

As Ganderite mentioned, the Mauser action is designed as a Controlled Feed action, that is, rounds are supposed to be fed from the magazine, and the rim of the cartridge is up against the bolt face and behind the extractor when it is loaded into the chamber. Many new to Mauser owners put a round into the chamber, then attempt to close the bolt. Next thing you see is a post on the internet about their gun not taking the cartridges.
