Mauser 96's at Tradex?

I'm not sure what exact set up the rifle you want has but mine is a slip on ring(for lack of better description) that matches the barrel exactly. In my case I'm sure a hammer and hardwood block would take it off.

It might be soldered on.....

This is just a guess as I don't have one (yet...!) but it is possible that there is a cross pin and a longitudinal "key" that fits in a slot in the barrel and sight ring, same as the SMLE Mk III. I wouldn't go whacking away with a hammer and block until you check!

No, not on a Mauser. It should be just soldered on, but sometimes, they have a little screw under the front sight blade. It would be wise to check before whaling on it with a hammer. :)

It might be soldered on.....as for the wood stocks, I did come across them in my search...who knows where that was though. I remember a price tag around $230. I'll go check back in my mess for ya.:D

The sights are soldered on..

Nice pick.:) I don't think you'll have to be overly patient waiting for your rifle to arrive, as I'm in Sask. and I received one from Tradex in 4 days.

Just got the rifle today. Ordered it late last monday, so one week in total.

Initial inspection shows that the stock is pretty rough, with notches cut for game shot all along the underside of the forearm, some under the butt near the pistol grip and a few on the top of the comb near the front. The metal all looks good, not much bluing left on the barrel. The bore looks excellent, bright and shiny with sharp rifling. I now need to mount a scope on it and take it for a test drive to see if it lives up to the reputation of the Swedes. I can agree with Tradex's description of overall good condition, it has been used, but not neglected.

I am not too bothered by the stock, because I had already decided that I will probably replace it if the thing shoots well and is a keeper. The comb is set for iron sights and is pretty low for scope use. Thanks to the lead on the Great American Stock Co. on page 2, I have found a beautiful black walnut stock for $112. Hopefully, they ship to Canada and then I will have a perfect deer/bear/moose rifle to pass on to my kids one day.

Let me know if anyone is interested in pics and I can post some detail ones.

Edit: Just bought this stock for the M96

Congrats, I want pics! and a range report, with pictures if possible!

Thanks, I will be scoping it this week and hopefully hitting the range on the weekend for a test drive. Ammo was $31 per box, so I will be reloading very quickly for it. I can pay off a press in one summer of casual shooting at that rate...

I will take some pics tonight and post them.

It has Weaver bases on it and I went looking at rings last night at Bass Pro in Calgary. All the Weaver rings were pretty wimpy looking and I would like a beefier set that fit those bases. Are there any heavier duty alternatives that fit the Weaver style bases? They were also out of the Bushnell 3200 3-9x40 I wanted, so I left empty handed on the optics front.

I got one of those Sporterized Swede 96's 6.5x55 from TradeEx also for $160. Actually it's a Husky 43' date. Overall Good condition with dark bore. Has the high comb, pistol grip and wider forend added to the original military stock. Also has Weaver bases installed, side safety, modified bolt sleeve with shortened striker travel, bent and swept bolt handle with winter knob. Just test fired it today as I'm waiting on a scope and it shoots fine.

To be honest, getting any Mauser with all these mods done well is value IMO. Stock needs cleaning, bedding, sanding and finishing, new butt pad and if the barrel isn't a shooter, no problem, I'll modify it with one of those 7.62x39 conversion kits or buy a new Swede 6.5x55 barrel for $95 and screw it on myself. I also plan on doing a hinged floorplate on it.

For the complete cost this will make a fine deer rifle for me. I'll get some pics before and after later. Just needs some finishing. You cannot beat old school craftsmanship. :)
Thanks TradeEx!
