Mauser 98 7.92x57mm ammo

I might be able to get a German WWII Mauser 98 rifle. But just wondering where can I get the ammo? It's 7.92x57mm.

Milsurp 8mm is hard to come by in Canada but it is out there. Besides milsurp, you can get factory North American 8mm at almost any gun store (though it is underpowered). Online, which is likely the cheapest in Canada right now, you can get SP Igman ammo at Districorp.

The cartridge is named differently in different parts of the world. In Europe, they call it 7.92x57mm. In North America, it is known as 8mm Mauser.

8mm Mauser is everything the 30/06 is and is sufficient for anything in North America short of the great bears. You are far better off buying a rifle already "sporterized" (stock modified, scope mounted, etc), than spending the money to modify a military rifle in original condition, i.e. spend money to reduce its value.

As for ammo, as suggested, Igman is the way to go for both target and hunting. I like close to the 200gr bullet weight for the 8mm.

I just got Igman from Districorp. I had 2 FTF in 60 rounds this past weekend.
Before I was shooting milsurp 8mm I bought at the show and they all fired fine. I'm going to go through another 60 rounds next weekend. Ohh its an East German Refurb 98K. I cleaned the bolt so its clean plus the rest of the rifle is clean too. I even tried chambering the round again but noting. The examination if the bulet revealed clean primer hit. The others fired no problem.

the gun I might get might be made in 1935 and was brought here by a German family when they immigrated here probably after the war. I believe it's quite a piece of collection.
