I bought a long barreled one from Tradex, and just got it to the range, I loaded up some old 175 grain CIL round nose bullets, and shot a couple over the chronograph to see how fast they were going. I was using 48 grains of CF 7900, which is slow surplus powder that I bought in 1994 from Tom Higginson. I bought the bullets about then too. This load got about 2500 fps in a 29 inch barrel. I set the sight at its lowest position, and sighted at 100 yards, and the first two bullets were an inch apart, the first one was in the bull, the second one was just to the right. I pulled the third one a little and it was 3 inches high, and an inch left. Suffice it to say I was thrilled, I will hunt with this rifle just like it is.

7x57 Mauser

The 7x57 Mauser is a fine Military and Hunting cartridge. Accurate for sure. You might try some 154 grain Hornadys with a good charge of IMR 4831. it seems to work well in my 7x57s.

You probably got a very nice rifle. I have found that Trade-ex is one of the better companies to deal with. They actually under rate the condition of their rifles, and you get a much better one than you expect to get.

I have heard tell of how the Brits with their sniders were suprised when the Boors has 7x57's. It would be hard to convince me that any of the military cartridges was much of an improvement over it. Nothing against the others, I have several of them, but I don't think any of them will do anything the 7x57 won't.

Something in this chambering is on my wanted list for sure.

139gr Hornady Interlock would be something to look at as well.

I shot a little deer one time with a 140 grain nosler partition. A friend had shot at it and after it ran away, it stopped in the brush and all I could see was a bit of its back, I shot it in the spine, behind the shoulders, the bullet turned on the spine and exploded the far hip, it turned about 60 degrees to go to the hip, of course the deer fell, but that one experience with lighter bullets just confirmed me as a heavy bullet fanatic. I never have to shoot very far, and even the cheapest 175 grain bullets have treated me very well in my other 7x57.

It always brings a smile to my face when someone shoots a 7x57, for the first time, with loads below 50,000psi. Mild recoil, especially on a straight Mauser style stock, with a high comb.
If you load the round up to its full potential, in an action strong enough to take it, it will recoil just as much as any other high pressure round.

If loaded to potential it is too close to a 308 to expect much less recoil, the other day at the range my 175 grain bullets were 2550 at the chrony, and a fellow with a 308 with smith and wesson 180 grain loads was 2640, that difference is not signifigant as far as I am concerned.
