I would like to keep the original bolt... original, as I want to modify a bolt to clear a scope and to correct the 'safe' headspacing. It will not close on the 'no-go' gauge, but it lacks tension and will continue to close if forced (no, I did not force it. I can read instructions)

The rifle in question is a Yugoslav rearsenaled German K98. The receiver is a pre-war/early war German manufacture. I am running a common "Tandzara" setup with Zrak swivel mounts with an ON-M76. The bolt clears the scope in the current setup, but I am in the process of acquiring a Zrak ON-M93 (6x42) with 7.9 BDC turrets. The bolt handle will not clear this scope. I will not be modifying the bolt myself.

Which large ring action bolts should I be looking for to assure proper fit and function? I have read the Czech Vz24 bolts will work well.

Any input, suggestions, thing to look out for?

"...will not close on the 'no-go' gauge..." That's the only part that's important. Another bolt may or may not give you safe headspace and as I recall there's no way of adjusting a Mauser's headspace to get another bolt to fit right.

The plan is to get more then one bolt body and attemp to find the best headspacing. It might be an fruitless attempt. I checked the headspacing with an other k98 bolt with the same result.

But I am no k98 expert.

Are you are putting the gauge under the extractor? if not you are feeling the extractor trying to flip over the rim. Also should remove the back of the bolt and firing pin so you don't feel the resistance of the firing pin assembly pressing against the sear when the bolt is closed.

I am removing the floor plate, putting the gauge under the extractor, sliding it in and closing the bolt gently. The bolt seems to close fully, but does not rotate to full lock. I can feel a lack of tension and the bolt hand still wants to move down. My other K98 bolt handle will stop dead on the no-go.

If you are getting the handle bent further down anyhow, buy a cheaper straight I handled bolt and have a smith bend it. Same price for labour, but the bolt body will be way cheaper.

That's the plan... if I can find one or two.

Marstar has some, but I am unsure of the make. The picture has a slight bent back bolt handle, could just be a representative picture. Have yet to hear back from Marstar. TradeEx is out of stock. Where else to look?

PS: if you feel resistance on a saami no go, it will pass a field gauge in stellar fashion. Stop worrying and shoot it.

It passes the 'field' gauge. Not too worried about the headspacing with the original bolt. Been shooting hot ammo with no issues apparent on the cases.

I suppose my main question is are all large ring 8x57 Mauser bolts interchangeable?

I would suggest that 99% of GERMAN made bolts are interchangeable. Same with the Czech ones. Some others, I would not trust without gauges.
