Mauser 98 for hunting??

For sure. Mauser 98 is reliable and smooth. Many "dangerous game" rifles have been produced using the M98. I have one with a Boyds laminate stock, chambered in .308 Win, and a 22" stainless bbl. It's a real shooter! Sub-moa with 165 gr. Sierra GameKings. Now I wish I had one in 6.5x55. All the best!

Thanks for all the replies and advice! Mine is currently chambered in 8x57, I love the gun and now I can't wait for the fall. I am an avid waterfowl hunter and haven't really jumped into big game hunting yet so this will be the first year for it. Now the trick is to find some ammo for it.

Is it scoped or open sights?
Commercial sights or original?

If it still has original irons you may have fun finding the right load to get the point of impact and point of aim on par with the original specs. Not impossible just don't expect one brand of ammo to be dead on but you may get lucky.

Scoped or some commercial sights will give you adjustable options for the ammo quirks as well as reloading.

Been there done that with a swede with military issued sights, spent a summer playing with different powders and loading recipes.

if you dont reload dont use the anemic north american ammo ...

Even factory North American "anemic" 170 grain ammo is still an equal of the .300 Savage in performance, certainly a fantastic deer cartridge and if I couldn't find a European loading that shot better probably would do the job on moose.
I think an 8x57 and North American ammo would be a great cartridge for mild recoil.

shops that have access to Sellier and Bellot should be able to order in the euro spec JS rounds if you don't reload and can wait for ammo to show up.

there's 3 different bullet types in JS available... the soft point is 2591 FPS for 196grains, not too bad considering the 170gr Remington stuff which costs a ton is under 2400fps.

you won't find it at the big stores though.

I used a Czech wartime 98 with a $10 scope for years. I had it rechambered to 8mm-06, and loaded my own ammo. I still have it, still have the $10 scope on it. Love the old rifle, but now use a 94 Winchester in .32 Special.

Take your old 98 out and enjoy.
