does anyone know where to get an updated safety for my model 98, the original near hits the bottom of my scope when in safe position and is awkward to get ready to fire for hunting?!?!?!?
go to gunpartscorp web site....mauser parts....sniper rifle safety repo...about $40.00....easy change.....works great. copy of the WW2 german safety. The israeli's made their own copy for the israeli 98k 7.62x51 sniper rifles.

No machining or modifications were needed. Also google "disassemble mauser bolt" for a step-by-step pictorial guide to dis/re-assembling the mauser bolt if you haven't done it before.
Price is about $40-$50, no permits or paperwork required. It can be shipped from Brownell's directly to your door in about a week. Their online ordering system is excellent.
The Tradeex safety would need a LOT of fitting and finishing.
I bought one. It wouldn't screw all the way on to the bolt body and the pivot screw struck up way above the safety body and filing it down would have eliminated the screw slot.
They were excellent about taking it back. They even reimbursed all shipping costs.
Most of the 98's that I have completed the "sporterizing" on, I have used Bold OP-98 triggers with side safety. Depending on the stock you have, you may have to remove some wood or plastic on the right side to make this safety work.
I have used the bold safety and it is at least as good as the similar Timney. You also may have to grind a bit off the trigger guard to allow clearance for the lower pivot.
