Mauser 98 Scope/Safety Issue

Hi Everyone,

I have a line on a sporterized Mauser(98 I believe). The scope interferes with the safety. I was thinking of putting a long eye relief scout scope rather than going the aftermarket safety route. I guess in theory, if the scope can be pushed forward, the safety would clear the scope. Any opinions on this?

Well you are correct, if the scope was not above the safety, the safety would function as designed... but it is not a big deal to have a good low scope safety installed. Mounting a scope forward is usually done so it is forward of the receiver... leaving the loading port very accessible... but this is not cheap to do well.

You might want to consider going to a replacement trigger with a side safety, like a Timney. You kill 2 birds that way, eliminate the safety problem and get a much better trigger.

Boyd's OP-98 trigger with side safety works well. Relieving some wood is often necessary for installation.
