Had a 90+ year old bushman over for dinner 2 nights ago…showed him the Lee-Enfields I had worked on this winter. He told me that he had a Mauser. Didn’t know where his brother (now deceased) got it but that it had been kept in a machine shed locker (unheated) for many decades and that some German immigrants renting a house from him had taken it home and “cleaned it up” and were shooting it. I thought, Uh oh. Went and took some pics of it this morning. Looks like they stripped the bluing from it! As I am new to mil surp tell me what you think? I just about cried when I saw it all shiny. What can you tell me about the rifle…other than that it was made in 1937? I think he’s promised it to the guys who had their evil way with her?

Well that rifle was restoreable......and the value would have been 750-800$ restored properly. As is value would be around 200-350. Depends on the buyer. It was most likely a vet bring back. Still looks decent. With the right work some one can restore it. S/243 indicates manufacture by Mauser Werke A.G.
Berlin-Borsigwalde and 1937 is obviously the year

You can see the "Germany" import stamp on the top of the barrel in one of the pictures. (Most likely 50s-70s import)

Yes, dgradinaru is correct on its manufacturer.

as it sits, worth $200, if it still shoots well and is capable of taking a deer, priceless! ;)

Still restorable, for fun, but not worth it for the money...
 
...thanks guys...that's what I thought...and the guys who did the cleaning are just wanting a shooter for plinking and perhaps deer...can't tell what the bore is like because it's too dirty. I'll let the owner know what he has...

Good eye...didn't catch that Germany.

The "GERMANY" stamp on the barrel is an export stamp from the 1950's saying that it was exported from Germany.

It's a mark added post 1945.
