Hello All & Merry Christmas!

I am considering purchasing this 98 Mauser action from a fellow CGN’er and was wondering if anyone could help me ID it. I am very pleased, and plan to make a old style sporter with it. The text from the ad read as follows:

Offered is a Mauser 98 large ring action. Manufacturer is unknown - only marking is on the top of the receiver (visible in pic). The outside condition is good overall with some light pitting (see the pics). The upper is in the white and the lower is military blue. Mechanically it is very good and quite tight. It is complete and functional. It has a nice curved flat butterknife handle. Numbers do not match on the parts. I have no idea what caliber it was originally in as the barrel I removed had the bore completely plugged with crud, but it looked like 8mm....

To me the markings look like a 3 petaled flower. I have done an fairly through search on the net but have yet to turn anything up. Any help you could offer would be great.

Regards and all the best

That 3 petal flower or mum resembles the Japanese Arisaka makers marks that are stamped on the receivers of the Arisaka. Butter knife bolt handle.
Interesting.

Gentleman:

I really appreciate you help.

With regards to the flower reference, I thought the same thing as well, however most of the mum related reference of 16-20 petal like this one.

So while I think we are on the right track, I'm not really sure. I would like to identify this one as I would like to figure out how much pressure cartridge wise it could take.

Desporterizer: chinese mauser, I never thought of that, I will see what I can find.

Thanks again and keep the ideas and responses coming

This one is a puzzler all right...All I can add right now is that the symbol on top of the receiver is the Japanese arsenal proof mark , the three interlocking circles...
I thought at first it might be the "Siamese" 8x52R mauser since you said it was some kind of 8mm. However I don't see the two shallow holes by the ejection port which would have held on the original dust cover for the action.
Also there should have been five characters stamped on the rear receiver bridge if it was the Jap Siamese mauser.
With that bolt handle tho . it must have been added on at a later date as it is not military origin...Also it looks like all the original markings have been removed probably when the bolt handle was done...
You could measure the bolt face and see what kind of cartridge head it will accept , whether it would be for a rimmed or rimless one...But since it does not appear to have the backwards slanting magazine box , it must be made for a rimless cartridge...
Thats about it from me right now , keep us posted okay?

Marking is not Japanese. Kokura/Koishikawa marking is made up of interlocking circles, not teardrops. Marking represents stacked cannonballs from above. Japanese arsenal markings are found on the side of the receiver after the serial & series marking.

Chinese, possibly Manchuria
