I have a Husqvarna FN 98 for which I purchased a semi-inletted stock from Richard's Microfit (a long time ago). I've got the rear ferrule figured out, but the front trigger guard/recoil boss doesn't seem right to me. With the mag box/trigger guard and barreled action assembled out of the stock, if I bottom out the front screw, the mag box touches the action. My understanding is that I would want some clearance there. How to get it? A small washer in the "cup" of the trigger guard boss? A full length tube/sleeve that fits around the outside of the bosses? Remove the bosses altogether and make a pillar (enter Bubba)?

I have read about the desire to have clearance between top edge of mag well and bottom face of receiver - I just went through Kuhnhausen's "Shop Manual" but can not find the reference for you. I do recall a John Barsness article where he mentions that he wants the magazine completely clear - not bearing on the stock or action front, sides, back or top. You do want that front receiver ring boss and trigger guard to fit tightly together and tight in the stock - it acts like a pillar to prevent the action from "wobbling" under recoil. Something in your assembly appears to be out of spec - possibly the front trigger guard "tube" is slightly short? Possibly the mag walls are too tall? I have used the small washer idea mostly because it is easy and is reversible if a better idea comes along.

This is how I want my mags to fit in relation to the receiver(FN in this case). The rear pillar has been cut/filed to provide the clearance and the front pillar was already the proper length. I’ve done this on quite a few Mausers and have never found the front pillar to be a problem. In the OP’s case, perhaps a few swipes with a file to the top of the mag box would provide some clearance.

Thanks for the input. If the top of the mag box is square to its sides, I'm more inclined to shim the front screw/boss area. I'll check, but I'd be well surprised if it isn't. Finding a perfectly sized washer for the cup is going to be a challenge. At this point I'm thinking about installing a pillar wide enough in diameter to clear the outside of the bosses and to bear on the surfaces of both the bottom metal and and recoil lug.
