I got my first K98 and some thing is wrong with the bolt.

the cocking piece will not #### far enough back for me to get the safe on. I changed the bolt body to a bent handle and same problem. do you think the spring is to weak to push it back all the way? you can push the cocking piece out by hand and get the safe on but it wont go by itself is just slips back down. any ideas? the bolt it came with was Chinese and a mix match of numbers.

It is because it is a mixmaster.

Bolts were fitted and tested for operation at the factory. Changing parts may make it out of spec.

Easiest thing is to try a new or different safety or cocking piece.

hello Trevor
heres a link to a similar issue you have.

"+2 bob in ohio. heres the pics. note the TINY bevel on the mauser saftey. its doable. BUT. and a big BUT.
ONE and only ONE swipe of the file at a time!!!! OR
you have a loose saftey. DONT go fast. ONE swipe then reassamble it and test. really. ive diced a couple non matching safteys by hurrying. then it flaps around making noise and is loose on the safe position."

thanks for the info. I checked with some one and they said all it might be is the sear. i'm hoping I cant find the firing pin and coking piece unit all together. that would probably be the easiest.

The sear could be worn, but not usually the case. This is a really common problem with mismatched parts.

And you will pay a lot more for a matching firing pin group....

deagle2008 has given you the ANSWER, friend.

This is a problem of FITTING the SAFETY to the COCKING-PIECE.

Th SPRING makes the Firing-pin go FORWARD, not backwards; it has nothing to do with the problem.

FIRST thing you should do is get a good MANUAL and study it until you are completely clear on the mechanical operation of the action. Once you completely understand what is doing what to what, and how it is doing it, the problem will become clear in your mind: the Cocking-piece is not moving far enough rearward for the Safety to catch it. The cheapest part involved in this is the Safety, so that is the one you modify. You modify the BEVEL on the Safety until it will engage with the Cocking-piece properly. Then you put on 1 drop of oil. Problem solved.

I have had this problem a couple of times on mixmasters over the years. Once you get a clear picture in your mind of what has to be done, it generally takes about 20 minutes and the problem will never happen again..... unless you start switching-out parts.

Have fun!
