Hello everyone,

This might be a stupid question so sorry in advance!

Would a Mauser C96 Broomhandle with an prescribed antique upper receiver still be considered an antique
if the lower receiver was made post 1987?

I have read that some C96's are hard to date.

And yes, I am a StarWars fan hahah

Thanks for reading this and thanks for any advice!

Have a great new week everyone!
Stay safe out there!

Regards,
Kevin H.

The registrated part is the frame so a new frame is a new gun. Antique frame is antique gun.

Hello enoch,

Thanks for your reply Sir!

I don't know much about these antique firearms.

The seller said the upper receiver is older and the lower receiver is newer.
I'm waiting for a serial number.

But does this make sense, do these broomhandles have upper and lower receiver.

When you mention the frame needs to be a prescribed antique, does that mean the lower receiver?

Thanks for your continued help and time.

Stay safe!
Cheers,
Kevin H.

Yes, the "upper" is the bolt/barrel assembly and the "lower"/grip frame contains the magazine, trigger assembly, etc
The "lower" is considered the receiver in Canada and whatever serial number is on it will be the determining factor in regards to antique status

Hello Milsspectacles,

Thanks for your time and help.

I've only owned antique revolvers.

I missed on two well priced Mauser C96's this week. So sad :(

Thanks again!
Cheers,
Kevin

Blocks of serial numbers were staggered in the pre and post 1898 years. April 97-Aug 97 about 1,000 were produced. Before this block was some pre production pieces, and Sept-Dec 97 some made too. Book 'Mauser Self Loading Pistol' is a guide used to establish pre 1898's.

Tell that to RCMP ident technical labs, they consider it an restricted weapon because of no data after ww2....

I try to deregister one early with all spec of an early broomhandle , they don't , so i sell it to another guy!!

disgusting.

Be afraid if someone want to sell an ''antique'' broomhandle'' , when i ask an letter of RCMP, sound of silence of the seller.....................................................

It’s impossible to consider a C96 as a historical weapon.

This is what you offer as your first post?

Excerpts from this site: The BroomHandle Mauser

"In military service for more than fifty years, the C96 Mauser Military Pistol ushered in the era of semi-automatic weapons on the modern battlefield."

"A young Winston Churchill, while serving with the 4th Hussars purchased and maintained one of these German made pistols."

"After the outbreak of war in 1914, with a general rush to arm new troops, Mausers found use with the German Army who purchased some 150,000 to supplement their standard issue Luger P08 pistols. Later these weapons found limited use by the armies of Norway, Bolivia, China, Indonesia, Persia, and Turkey at one time or another."

"Mausers were purchased through Bolshevik agents operating out of Sweden in 1917 and supplied to many officers of the Cheka and Red Army. At least one of these weapons (serial no. 167177) was present at the infamous execution of Tsar Nicholas II and his family in Yekaterinburg. It is currently in the Yekaterinburg museum, donated by the owner who used it that night."

"Chiang Kai-Shek, the leader of Chinese Nationalist Forces in the Sino Japanese War and foe of Mao Zedoung, carried a Mauser for several years publicly before Germany became involved as a Japanese ally."

"A very photogenic handgun, the Mauser found itself starring in supporting roles in dozens of Saturday serials and movies. It should also be noted that fictional smuggler Han Solo’s blaster in the original “Star Wars” (1977) science fiction epic was a modified 1896 Broomhandle."
--The reason the OP is interested in one.

"From Winston Churchill to a Galaxy Far far away, the underdog Mauser has been a witness to some of the most important military history of the past one hundred years."

Hey everyone,

Sorry for my slow reply, but I am grateful for all yours.

I remember someone selling a C96 a few years a go in the forums.
No, RCMP letter.

So do you all recommend not buying one?
I've seen a few 1897/96 for sale in the USA and found a guy south of the border that can find me one from those years.

Hey Clotho, awesome excerpts! Chiang Kai-Shek's favourite architect was my Grand Father!

Well, thanks again for your time and help everyone.

Hope you all stay safe out there right now!
Cheers,
Kevin H.

Thanks, I'll look into that book!

wbaad, Edit* - Sorry, I'm still looking, I'm having a hard time finding it because the PDF file is so large
Thanks so much again people!
Cheers

Have to contact the Firearms Tech with description and numbers, and get a yea or nay...did it verbally then sent in actual pics to get it papered...but that was years ago...

So, is there any antique in Canada and how do we know it's antique?

There are around a dozen. I own one such. A member here did an ATIP request to find out which serial the antiques cut off at. He was hoping to find a letter issued to a pistol with a higher serial than his, but mine was below... I don't think he received something 100% conclusive, but you should be able to look for the ATIP and read for yourself. The one thing it had included was the letters for the broomhandles that the RCMP confirmed as antiques (with serials redacted) so we know that there are a good number of them.

I'm looking at one that is claimed to have been produced in 1897, If I pm'ed you a serial number could you confirm if it's above or below yours?
