Hello I was wondering if anybody could tell me a little about this rifle including the caliber. It has no caliber stamp as well as the waffenfabrik so I assume its a milsurp. All the numbers match except the magazine. Also seems to missing the slider for the rear sight. Thanks in advance Cheers

That is a Swedish Mauser in 6.5x55 (unless it's been rechambered).

It has been taken out of the original stock and put into a sporter stock.

It was originally an 1896 but appears to be one of those converted to an m38. A sporter front sight was put on it.

That rear sight is a dial type, never had a sliding elevator.

The Swedes had them made in Germany (insisting on them using Swedish steel though) and started making their own in 1901. ( I have one of those)

99% certain it's chambered in 6.5x55. Can't tell from the picture.

Andy, maybe you can chime in here. You have a book with the Swede serial numbers.

Yea, pictures don't say it all, but most of what has been said is correct. It was a M96 Swedish Mauser made by the German firm of Oberndorf in 1899 and 1900. The Swedes did make their own (by Carl Gustafs) starting in 1898, but didn't really ramp up production until 1900. If the barrel is more than 24" long, it was never converted to an M38 (aka M96/38) by the Swedes. I'd be very surprised if it was not in 6.5x55.

Here's a good link for general info on the Swedish mausers. I am always wary of Wikipedia (and the Internet in general), but the cited sources are from Dana Jones' excellent book.

Probably a $150 gun, although if it was parted out, the stock and rear sight might fetch $50-75 and $50 respectively, and the remaining bits another $75, IMO.

Thanks alot for the replies! That clears up many of my questions. It's 24.5" barrel length and I can see C.G. in front of the serial no. There is a lot of "crown" proof stamp so it looks Swedish. My 30 cal(7.62) brush doesn't fit so it probably is the smaller 6.5 cal. Thanks again. Cheers
