Looking for some help trying to narrow down some more information on this lovely old Mauser. My best guess is a Mauser sporting rifle with Lyman aperture sight. It’s all numbers matching in 30US (30-06) including the stock. Not sure if today’s value is in line with previous decades but it is certainly a well executed example of German gunsmithing. Let me know your thoughts.

Can’t help you with value, but it does look like a really nice rifle! How’s the bore?

Bore is excellent, I would say well above average for it’s age. The older gentleman that had it shot one buck with it after he purchased it in the 80s and has been a safe dweller since.

So what you have is a Type B commercial sporter from the Mauser Werke factory in Oberndorf. It dates to 1922, best estimate.

My impression is that it's been reblued, but without having it in hand or seeing better pictures, I'll reserve judgement. The additional screw holes for the peep detract slightly from the value. Rear sight is obviously missing, and the front sight looks like it might have been replaced.

I recently picked up a similar rifle, though not in as good condition, for $900 with taxes, shipping and auction premiums all in. That wasn't a steal, but I don't feel like I was fleeced either.
I would rate yours at $1500 - 2000.

I think that these particular actions, the pre-war commercial 98's specially built for the .30/06, are the finest Mauser actions ever produced. Most ( maybe all ) had small diameter barrel threads, which means that the receiver walls are thicker. The magazine is longer than that for an 8x57, and feeds beautifully with the .30/06. The hinged floorplate with the release in the guard bow is a handsome touch.

Very fine rifes.

I agree that the front sight is not original as it’s quite tall. Presumably to allow zeroing with the Lyman peep. I’ll try and take some pictures outside but doubt it’s been reblued as the two previous owners certainly didn’t do it and that covers the last 50 odd years. But, one will never know. Thanks for the info 9.3
