Hello Fellow CGNers,

I have a gorgeous K98 with no damage and matching numbers that I enjoy shooting, and have flirted with the idea of mounting a scope on it. I honestly have no idea what it would require in terms of modifications and also if it will reduce the value of the rifle. Any help from our community here will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, happy and safe shooting in 2021!

Mount a scout mount, or another optic that doesn't require drilling and tapping. Most replace the rear sight, and use the rear sight base. Because D&T will def reduce the value of the firearm, if it is as nice as you say.

If drilled and tapped it's an excellent way to turn a $2000 rifle into a $500 rifle. Scout mounts that use the rear sight base as mentioned above are the better option.

Yup because my Israeli's K98 is worth only a couple hundred dollars. Because some idiot before we took possession, took a grinder to the stripper clip guide, and D&T the receiver. And it's not even true to the bore.

You don't touch your k98. If you would like to do a sniper reproduction take a RC with good code and year. Find zf41 or zf39

When those rifles first came out, they were around $70 taxes in and shipped from International. A used Remington or Winchester at the time was over $400 with the same chambering.

Back in the day this sort of thing was common and a lot of hunters/shooters at the time wouldn't have been able to afford to get into the game. Just like the SKS today.

A lot of those rifles had close to pristine bores, were assembled properly and as such very accurate with ammo they liked. some folks feel they are handy DIYs, which, as in the case of your rifle is up for debate.

Just because it was your bad luck to pick it up, after the deed was done, isn't a good reason to knock it. If it weren't for such mods, a lot of hunters and shooters would never have gotten into the game.

The same thing will be said about "crappy" SKS clunkers, ten years from now and the same expletives will be used to describe those doing the mods.

I'm not knocking it. I spent 300$ on mine for a NOS 762 barrel, and completely refinished mine.. But I won't get the full collector value for mine.

I purchased one many years ago for 150 $ and had it drilled and tapped for a scope, being that cheap I wanted a nice hunting rifle and what a tack driver it is.

in europe my grandfather used the same kind of mount and a zeiss 4x. the collector value is in the eye of the beholder. wait few years and we will talk about the value of your belonging ...

I believe you. It's that it looks just like the ZRAC I have.

It used to have Weaver 45 and 46 rings, with millett angle loc, with some oval objective Tasco scope. Back when Pops had it.

Went to put a Weaver K4, with detachable top weaver rings. But I had ran out of windage. Who ever D&T didn't do it true to the bore. So I went with Leupold dovetail, and extension rings, so I could use smaller tube scopes and comp for the windage with the mount.

Have you check out the BADACE K98 scope mount . No drill or tap . Looks like a very sturdy scope mount . I will be trying one soon. You can check them out on Google .
